Statement on Federal Medical Marihuana Policy

OTTAWA, June 10, 2013 /CNW/ - Dr. Rocco Gerace, MD, President of the Federation of Medical Regulatory Authorities of Canada (FMRAC), today issued the following statement in regard to Health Minister Leona Aglukkaq's announcement on medical marihuana.

Our overriding interest is the protection and safety of patients, and the quality of care they receive from licensed physicians.

We strongly believe that the practice of medicine should be evidence-based, and that physicians should not be asked to prescribe or dispense substances or treatments for which there is little or no evidence of clinical efficacy or safety.

We believe that the new federal medical marihuana regulations put patients and the general public at risk.

The new regulations as written are an abdication on the part of Health Canada of its role in patient safety and public protection.

Without clinical proof of efficacy and safety, we, as representatives of the medical regulatory authorities in Canada, will oppose the federal government's new medical marihuana regime released today.

FMRAC is the national organization and the privileged voice of the thirteen provincial and territorial medical regulatory authorities.
