OTTAWA, Nov. 13, 2011 /CNW/ - I would like to congratulate Robbi Weldon and Daniel Chalifour on winning Canada's first medals at the 2011 Parapan American Games in Guadalajara, Mexico, today.

Robbi Weldon from Thunder Bay Ontario with pilot Lyne Bessette of Knowlton Quebec won gold in the 21.6 km time trials in cycling for athletes with visual impairment and Daniel Chalifour of Lac-des-écorces Quebec with pilot Ed Veal of Queensville Ontario took the bronze. Cycling is one of 13 sport disciplines being contested at these Games.

Along with all Canadians, I am extremely proud of the outstanding performance by Robbi and Daniel, their pilots and all of Canada's athletes at the Games. I am thrilled to cheer on Team Canada as they compete against the best high-performance parasport athletes in the Americas.

On behalf of Prime Minister Stephen Harper and the Government of Canada, I would like to congratulate all of Team Canada's athletes on their achievements. I wish all of our competitors much success at the Games.
