Statement by the Honourable Bal Gosal, Minister of State (Sport), on the Announcement of Canada's Flag Bearer at the IV Parapan American Games

OTTAWA, Nov. 9, 2011 /CNW/ - I would like to congratulate David Durepos, who has been given the honour of carrying the Canadian flag at the opening ceremony of the IV Parapan American Games in Guadalajara, Mexico.

One of the world's best outside shooters in wheelchair basketball, Mr. Durepos of Fredericton, New Brunswick, has been on the national team since 1994. He has won two Paralympic gold medals and a silver, along with a silver medal from the 2007 Parapan American Games in Rio, Brazil.

Our Government is proud to work with the Canadian Paralympic Committee and the sport community to raise awareness of Paralympic sport and support our athletes with disabilities. These athletes are an inspiration and a source of pride for all Canadians.

More than 1,500 athletes from over 30 countries will be taking part in the IV Parapan American Games from November 12 to 20, 2011. These participants, the best parasport athletes of the Americas, will compete against one another in 13 different disciplines, and some will seek to qualify for the 2012 Paralympic Games in London.

On behalf of Prime Minister Stephen Harper and the Government of Canada, I wish much success to all the Canadian athletes taking part in the Games. I would also like to thank the coaches, parents, and friends who offer their unwavering support to our athletes so that they are able to reach new heights in their sport.
