Star athletes and office workers break a record - The RBC Challenge for Centraide raised 102 000$

MONTREAL, Nov. 23, 2011 /CNW Telbec/ - The 14th annual RBC Challenge for Centraide, which was held at noon today at Place Ville Marie, raised an impressive $102,000 for the neediest people in our community, breaking the 95 000$ record that was set last year.

Some 50 teams of star athletes and downtown office workers also attempted to break another record: racing up the 41 flights of one of Montreal's tallest buildings in less than 2 minutes 41 seconds.

This friendly race for Centraide featured a team of athletes and former athletes who have distinguished themselves in their respective sports. Paralympic swimmer Benoît Huot, diver Marie-Ève Marleau, hockey player Caroline Ouellette, fencer Sandra Sassine and water-polo players Christine Robinson, Joelle Bekhazi, Carmen Eggens, Monika Eggens, Emily Csikos and Rosanna Tomiuk, all generously agreed to mobilize for Centraide's cause and take up the challenge. Paralympic sledge hockey player Benoît St-Amand was the coach of the team.

All the proceeds of this fundraising activity, derived from corporate sponsorships and donations, will be donated to Centraide's 2011 campaign, whose goal is to raise $59 million. This campaign, which ends on December 15, aims to support some 360 community agencies that help half a million needy people in Greater Montreal.

This benefit sporting event was organized by RBC in cooperation with Ivanhoé Cambridge.
