Specialty Hospitals Welcome Ontario Government's Mental Health and Addictions Strategy

A comprehensive plan for the future with important early investments in children

TORONTO, June 22, 2011 /CNW/ - The Ontario government's new mental health and addictions strategy, released today, was welcomed by the province's specialty mental health centres: Ontario Shores Centre for Mental Health Sciences (Ontario Shores), The Royal Ottawa, Waypoint Centre, and the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH).

"Today's release of the strategy was an important step forward in building a system of care right across the province for the one in five Ontarians who will have a mental illness," said Carol Lambie, President and CEO of Waypoint Centre for Mental Health Care.

"We recognize that a multi-sectoral and coordinated approach is needed to provide equitable access to high quality and timely care for Ontarians, wherever they live," said Glenna Raymond, President and CEO of Ontario Shores. Noting the important work that led to this strategy, particularly by an all-party Select Committee of the Legislature and the Minister's Advisory Group, all the hospitals are eager to pursue next steps and implement the directions in the strategy.

George Weber, President and CEO of The Royal Ottawa Health Care Group, noted that "the emphasis on the spectrum of care right across the continuum, from hospital to community, is an important aspect of the strategy - making sure clients get the right care in the right place at the right time is critical".

Considering that the majority of mental disorders begin during childhood or adolescence, the hospitals were particularly pleased with the strategy's early investments in children and youth, citing the dividends that these investments will pay later in life.  "Ensuring that our youngest citizens have the appropriate supports at home, in school and throughout the community is the most effective way to support mental health," noted Dr. Catherine Zahn, President and CEO of CAMH.

The four hospitals, working together with other organizations right across the province, are committed to high quality care, education and innovative research in mental health.
