Upcoming Events for Day 4 July 11
- Day 4 marks the start of rhythmic gymnastics competition at the Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre. All other sports will continue with the exception of powerlifting.
- Divisioning for soccer, softball and bocce is now complete with round robin play well underway. Divisioning races for swimming continue in the morning followed by final races in the evening at the UBC Aquatic Centre.
- Singles competition for 10-pin bowling takes place in Richmond at The Zone Bowling Centre.
Highlights from Day 3 July 10
- At close of Day 3, 522 of 2,214 medals have been awarded.
- Super speed seen at the track with a double gold medalist in Men's 5km and 10km; and 3 sprinters have made the finals for the Men's 100m by finishing their preliminary heat in under 12 seconds.
- The free Healthy Athletes program continues with screening in six key areas: podiatry, audiology, vision, dentistry, physical therapy, and health and wellness. People with intellectual disabilities have a 40 per cent higher risk for health issues.
Interesting Facts
- Rhythmic gymnastics is Special Olympics Canada's second smallest summer sport with 906 athletes. Only female athletes may compete in rhythmic gymnastics at the Games.
- Swimming was the first sport to include Special Olympics athletes on provincial/territorial teams at the Canada Games.
Did You Know?
- The Games has a goal to be a zero waste event, incorporating food scraps composting programs and minimal paper usage throughout operations.
Sustainability
- The 2014 Games in Vancouver are the first Special Olympics Canada Games to officially dedicate an entire team toward sustainability.
- Friday is Blender Bikes Day at the Sustainability booth at the Festival Lounge where athletes and spectators will power blenders on a bicycle to make their own smoothies using ingredients from UBC Farms.
The Special Olympics Canada 2014 Summer Games are taking place in Vancouver, British Columbia from July 8 to 12, 2014, featuring over 2,000 athletes, coaches and officials, in 11 sports.
