Shawville's Valu-Mart's unlimited strike moves to Toronto

TORONTO, May 5 /CNW Telbec/ - The 30 salaried workers of Shawville's Valu-Mart, on strike for more than five months today, called out to Loblaw's shareholders during the company's annual shareholders' meeting.

The workers denounce their employer's attitude towards negotiations. "The company refuses to even meet with its workers, regrets David Bergeron-Cyr, vice president of the Fédération du commerce de la CSN (FC-CSN). They refuse to negotiate. We have a feeling that they do not understand what's going on", he adds.

The main point of dissent is that Loblaw wants its Toronto head office to lead the negotiation with Shawville's Valu-Mart, despite the fact that all the other grocery stores in the province dealt with Loblaw's Montreal office. The union therefore wishes for their employer to restart the negotiation with, as a frame of reference, the settlements reached in Quebec. All of this in a perspective of reaching a settlement similar to the other Loblaw banners of the same size in Québec that have a similar turnover.

"We have negotiated with every other Loblaw in Quebec without any trouble, we simply cannot understand the problem here", questions David Bergeron-Cyr.

Shawville's Valu-Mart workers are affiliated with the FC-CSN since 1979. Valu-Mart is a chain of supermarkets based in Ontario. It is a unit of National Grocers, itself a unit of Loblaw Companies Limited, Canada's largest food distributor.

The workers are asking Loblaw to take action in this conflict and to ensure that Shawville's Valu-Mart negotiates.
