Seneca to open first Confucius Institute in the GTA

TORONTO, Nov. 24, 2011 /CNW/ - Seneca College will officially open the first Confucius Institute in the GTA at Seneca's Markham Campus (8 The Seneca Way, Markham) at 5 p.m.

With Chinese cultural activities and an official opening ceremony, the event brings together representatives from Northeast Normal University, representatives from the Consulate-General of the People's Republic of China in Toronto, Chinese community leaders and entrepreneurs, representatives from various levels of government, and Seneca students and staff.

"We are delighted to officially open Seneca's Confucius Institute to provide businesses and our community with programming that promotes Chinese language and culture," said Seneca College President David Agnew. "From programming that can be custom-designed to help Canadian businesses develop better relations with Chinese businesses to after-school programs to teach children Mandarin, the Institute furthers Seneca's commitment to our community and our partners."

Established as partnerships between Chinese and local post-secondary institutions, Confucius Institutes promote Chinese language and culture, support Chinese language training and facilitate cultural exchanges. There are now more than 300 Confucius Institutes around the world including nine in Canada. Seneca's partnership with Northeast Normal University in Changchun has brought the first Confucius Institute to the Greater Toronto Area.

Confucius Institute programming will meet market demands beginning with the establishment of the Confucius Institute Mandarin for Proficiency tests.

In addition, the Confucius Institute will identify corporate needs and develop programming for the business sector. Community needs for Mandarin teacher training in the public and private sector will also be assessed and training programs developed in co-operation with Northeast Normal University. The Confucius Institute will also investigate the development of an academic stream for students wishing to obtain a Seneca College certificate.

Seneca has appointed members to the Confucius Institute Advisory Board to oversee the overall operations of the Institute. Members include Helen Hayward, Jinyan Li and Royson Ng and will also include Yichun Liu and Junfeng Zhao appointed by Northeast Normal University.
