Sears Great Canadian Run Teams Up with SickKids to End Childhood Cancer

The Relay to End Kids Cancer

TORONTO, Sept. 20, 2012 /CNW/ - Sears Canada Inc. is calling on Ontario residents to lace up for The Relay to End Kids Cancer.  On September 22, 2012, relay teams of up to 20 people are invited to join hundreds of Canadians on a full-day running adventure from Toronto to Blue Mountain.  In 2011, its inaugural year, 800 participants across Canada raised over $500,000 in the first Sears Great Canadian Run in support of children battling cancer. Proceeds from The Run support pediatric oncology research and treatment initiatives at The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids).

The 2nd annual Toronto to Blue Mountain Run will take in the beauty of autumn on Saturday, September 22, 2012. The stunning route offers four distance options (25km, 50km, 100km or 125km), and each leg ranges from 4 km to 12 km in length. Teams will have the opportunity to create their own strategy to manage the route by taking turns throughout the day. The Run was awarded "Best National Running Event (non-marathon)" in Get Out There Magazine's 2011 Readers' Choice Awards.

"The Sears Great Canadian Run supports a cause that is important to our associates and customers in communities across the country," said Calvin McDonald, President and CEO, Sears Canada Inc. "The Sears Great Canadian Run gives Canadians - runners and non-runners alike - a great reason to team up for a cause that affects thousands of children and families every single day. The Sears Great Canadian Run is a way for Canadians to support families who are going through the most challenging of times."

The Sears Great Canadian Run on September 22 will raise funds for the Sears Canada Charitable Foundation.  The Foundation's donation for the Run will be split evenly between supporting the Sears Cancer Clinic at The Hospital for Sick Children and The Sears Childhood Cancer Fellowship at SickKids which conducts research into pediatric oncology.

In support of the fight against childhood cancer, Sears has been title sponsor of events that have raised over $5 million for the cause since 2008. In 2010, the Sears Canada Charitable Foundation made a multi-year, $5 million commitment to SickKids, which sees 25% of all new cases of pediatric cancer in Canada and 60% of all cases in Ontario.

"Approximately 1,400 children are diagnosed with cancer each year, and many of those children will come through SickKids' doors," said Adrian Horwood, Vice President, Corporate Partnerships, SickKids Foundation. "We are very grateful to Sears Canada and its employees for their support of the Sears Cancer Clinic. Corporate partnerships like these help raise critical funds for the Hospital and allow us to continue to provide world-leading care for our young patients and their families."
