Say Goodbye to Ties and Tools this Father's Day

- TD offers advice to shoppers looking to trade tired clichés for more original gifts for Dad -

TORONTO, June 6, 2011 /CNW/ - Canadian dads have nominated the humble tie (65%), tools and other DIY-related gifts (19%) and mugs (12%) as the most cliché Father's Day gifts, according to a new survey by TD Credit Cards.

The TD First Class Travel Father's Day Survey found a significant number of Canadians struggle to come up with a thoughtful and affordable gift every Father's Day, with two-in-five (39%) admitting they feel stressed and rushed when it comes to selecting the perfect present for their dad.

"Whether your dad is the type of guy who has everything or someone who's just hard to shop for, Father's Day isn't supposed to be about scrambling to find the perfect gift. It really is the thought that counts," says Stacie Pearson, Associate Vice President, TD Credit Cards. "Consider sharing an experience with your dad, or if he's the guy who's got it all, perhaps n you'd planned or worrying about what to get, consider a gift card to show him that you care, while giving him the freedom to treat himself to the perfect gift that he'll actually use and enjoy."

Pearson offers her advice for Canadians looking to give their dad something unique this Father's Day:

  1. Help him hone a new skill: Whether your dad truly is an expert - or just likes to pretend he's one - learning a new skill is always fun. Surprise your dad with classes for something that he's always wanted to try like gourmet cooking, brewing his own beer, golf lessons or sailing.
  2. Spend quality time together: Father's Day is a great time to sit back and relax with dad, especially if he has more of a low-key personality. Try spending time outdoors, like a day on the lake catching fish, or taking in a round of golf together. Do something that allows the two of you to get away for the day or even a weekend.
  3. Treat him to a unique experience: For dads who already have everything, try sharing a new experience together. Whether it's trying a new restaurant, taking a daytrip to visit some wineries or renting that luxury car your dad has always dreamed of driving, your dad will appreciate spending time with you - and will probably have stories to tell about the new experience afterwards.
  4. Gift Cards: With so many different types of gift cards available, it's easy to pick one that suits your dad while still giving him the opportunity to have fun picking out a gift he's truly excited about.

"A good credit card will give you the freedom and flexibility to redeem your points on a wide range of experiences like a day on the links or renting a boat for a fishing weekend. For ultimate flexibility, your card should also give you the option of redeeming for gift cards from top retailers." says Pearson. "For example, The new TD Rewards website - www.tdrewards.com - is a 'one-stop-shop' with a number of great gift ideas - whether it's booking a room for a golf weekend, sports memorabilia, a new fishing rod or getting exclusive offers , TD Rewards brings you great deals and everyday savings."
