OPP Team Up With New York State Police for Safety Initiative

NIAGARA, ON, April 19 /CNW/ - On Friday, April 22, 2011, the Niagara Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) will conduct a highly visible traffic safety enforcement initiative in this Detachment area that will be simultaneously mirrored by the New York State Police (NYSP).

At 12:00pm on this date, the OPP Highway Safety Division Commander, Chief Superintendent Bill Grodzinski will conduct a symbolic hand shake ceremony with Captain Craig Hanesworth Zone 1 Commander for the NYSP on the Rainbow Bridge in Niagara Falls, on the border, to emphasize the shared goal of safe roadways regardless of jurisdictions.

OPP officers will be concentrating their enforcement efforts in locations on the Queen Elizabeth Way, Highway 405, Highway 406 and Highway 3 in response to statistical indications of required enforcement to reduce the incidence of collisions.  Officers will be concentrating on the offences that result in the greatest contribution to serious and sometimes fatal collisions, with particular attention to Impaired Driving, Aggressive Driving, Distracted Driving and Improper Seat Belt Use.

This initiative will run concurrently with the OPP Easter Long Weekend Traffic Initiative. The greater "Safety Without Borders" initiative extends throughout Ontario's border areas and, in the Eastern Region, will involve the Sûreté du Québec and the NYSP.   Representatives of the media are invited to attend the noon-hour ceremony on the Rainbow Bridge in Niagara Falls.
