Royal Gifts: Canadians Choose Maple Syrup and Local Art to Present the Duke and Duchess During First Official Tour of Canada

Top toasts for the royal couple with custom gift rooted in royal heritage

TORONTO, June 30, 2011 /CNW/ - As Canadians eagerly anticipate the arrival of The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge for their Royal Tour of Canada today, they weigh-in on Canadian gifts that are worthy enough for a future King and his wife.

According to a poll commissioned by Canadian royal icon, Crown Royal Canadian Whisky, Canadians believe a collection of Canadian Art is the most fitting gift for the royal couple (29%), followed closely by Maple Syrup (15%), and a collection of Canadian music (13%).   Other recommended gifts included high quality Canadian Whisky (11%), a hand carved canoe (9%) and matching hockey sticks (5%).

Taking their cue from Canadians, Crown Royal enlisted Canadian Artist and Glass Blower Brad Copping to help them create an artistic masterpiece for the Royal couple, rooted in royal heritage.   Knowing Crown Royal was born more than seventy years ago to honour the Canadian tour of Prince William's great-grandparents, Copping leapt at the opportunity, creating a one-of-a-kind, exquisite hand-crafted Crown Royal bottle.

"I wanted to recreate that moment in 1939 when Queen Elizabeth and King George VI were presented with a crown shaped bottle in a regal purple bag filled with an exceptionally smooth blend of Canada's finest whisky, but I wanted to give it a modern twist to reflect the youthful vibrancy and style of William and Kate," said Copping.   "As a result, I maintained the crown shape to symbolize tradition and added several curves and torques to represent this glamorous and contemporary couple."

A truly artful expression of Canadian geography, Copping carved the bottle to reflect his home on the Canadian Shield, giving the bottle exterior deep cuts to reflect the Shield's jagged rock cliffs and strong flowing waters.

Knowing Canadian whisky has long been a favourite of the royal family, and a right royal tipple, Canadians also submitted personalized toasts to welcome the Royal couple to Canada.  The top toasts from across the country are:

  • "May your marriage be as peaceful and loving as life in Canada! May it always contain the beauty evident in our native land! May your life be as bountiful as the richness we possess as Canadians!" ~ Alberta

  • "To our next generation of royalty, we salute you, and all that you stand for." ~ British Columbia

  • "Welcome to Canada far and wide, with open arms and beaming pride. Sense of humour, rye not gin, so raise a glass and c'mon in!" ~ Ontario

  • "An old colony proudly welcomes the new royalty!" ~Saskatchewan

  • "Here's to you, here's to me, a royal couple you'll always be, and if I see you nearing me, I'll bow, and curtsy with pedigree." ~ Northwest Territories

  • "To the new era of the monarchy!" ~ Nova Scotia

  • "Here's to bringing young, vibrant and engaging energy to a world in need of inspiration." ~Prince Edward Island

  • "We stand on guard for you!" ~ Newfoundland and Labrador

"We are delighted to create this special commemorative bottle for the royal couple during their eleven-day tour and look forward to toasting them with Canada's words and a rare blend of more than 50 of Canada's finest whiskies," said David Allard, Director, Crown Royal.
