Rocky View County collected over 11,000 kilograms of obsolete pesticides

OTTAWA, Jan. 24 /CNW/ - Rocky View County in Alberta collected 11,275 kilograms of obsolete pesticides during a collection program held last year in partnership with CleanFARMS(TM).

"CleanFARMS(TM) is proud to offer collection programs to ensure unwanted or obsolete pesticides can be disposed of in an environmentally responsible way, at no cost to farmers," said Barry Friesen, general manager of CleanFARMS(TM). "Our programming is an important demonstration of the commitment Canada's plant science industry has to ensuring its products are properly managed."

The Rocky View County obsolete pesticide collection program was held at five locations over the course of the summer and early fall of 2010 where farmers could drop off unwanted and unused pesticides.

"Rocky View County is very appreciative of the partnership we have formed with CleanFARMS(TM)," said Joanne Walroth, solid waste and recycling officer for Rocky View County. "This partnership enables us to provide a higher level of service to our residents while keeping costs for disposal reasonable, as well as providing our residents with the ability to dispose of these products in an environmentally safe manner."

The CleanFARMS(TM) obsolete pesticide collection program is a national, industry-initiated program that, since 1998, has assumed responsibility for more than 1.4 million kilograms of obsolete, commercial-grade pesticides. After collection, the pesticides are taken to a licensed disposal facility where they are disposed of through high temperature incineration.

"This was the first time that CleanFARMS(TM) partnered with a county and it was a huge success for both the industry and the municipality," said Friesen. "We are looking forward to continuing the partnership in the future."

Since 1998 more than 1.4 million kilograms of obsolete, commercial-grade pesticides have been collected for safe and environmentally responsible disposal.
