RN Register now online for public lookup

EDMONTON, April 27 /CNW/ - A new online lookup service will allow the public to verify the registration of registered nurses (RNs) and nurse practitioners (NPs) who are members of the College and Association of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CARNA). By inputting a nurse's exact first and last name, the viewer will be able to see a nurse's registration number, registration status (RN, NP, non‐practicing, etc), permit expiry date and any conditions on the registration or permit. The look up is available on the home page of the CARNA website, www.nurses.ab.ca.

This information is required to be publicly available according to the Health Professions Act (HPA), and has previously been provided through the CARNA office during business hours. In announcing this service, CARNA joins 11 other Alberta health profession regulators and seven other RN regulators in Canada who have adopted online lookup as best practice for verification.

"While an online lookup has been available since 2002 for employers and verification has traditionally been provided to the public through the CARNA office, this new service will facilitate more timely access to information about the current status of registered nurses across the province," says Mary‐Anne Robinson, CARNA chief executive officer. "Online verification supports our mission of serving the public by supporting safe, competent nursing care and promoting professional excellence."

Alberta's Health Professions Act (HPA) mandates that regulated health professions have a Register, which is open to the public, containing information related to the status of a regulated member's permit. In recent years, public online registers have emerged as a best‐practice in the regulation of health professionals for the purpose of authenticity and protection of the public from fraudulent practitioners.

The public online lookup will assure more timely and accurate verification of licensure for registered nurses and nurse practitioners and also complements CARNA's upcoming move to electronic practice permits when RNs and NPs apply to CARNA for annual renewal of registration.

CARNA is the professional and regulatory body for Alberta's more than 33,000 RNs, including nurses in direct care, education, research and administration as well as nurse practitioners. Its mandate is to protect the public by ensuring that Albertans receive effective, safe and ethical care by registered nurses.
