Provincial Candidates Debate Public Education Issues Across the Province

TORONTO, Sept. 20, 2011 /CNW/ - The Ontario Public School Boards' Association has declared September 20th Education Day in the province of Ontario. This evening, candidates from the four major provincial parties have been invited to share their views and answer questions on the issues affecting public education in local schools throughout the province.

"The growth of our province depends on high-quality, publicly-funded education," said OPSBA president Catherine Fife. "Education is the second largest item in the provincial budget and with the upcoming fall election, it is important that citizens have the facts needed to make an informed decision on October 6."

Government policies affect the world our children and youth will inherit tomorrow. And they affect their opportunities to get a good education today. The Provincial government decides what is taught in our schools and how much of our Provincial taxes are used to pay for education. This affects everyone — whether or not you have children in the school system.

In support of Education Day, many School Board Trustees have organized meetings to offer their community an opportunity to:

  • Learn more about issues affecting public education in Ontario
  • Hear from each of the local candidates from the four major provincial parties and understand their position on key issues
  • Speak up and ask questions

Meetings are being held across the province and we hope that parents, students, seniors and other members of the public will attend their local event and learn about the issues impacting Ontario's public schools. We encourage you to contact your local school board to find out more about tonight's debates.
