Private Social Network Powers Canada's New Democratic Party to Historic Win

OTTAWA, May 5, 2011 /CNW/ -- The Canadian political landscape was dramatically reshaped last night as the New Democratic Party of Canada secured federal representation for the first time in its history. The NDP nearly tripled their representation in Parliament, going from 34 seats to 106 to secure its role as the main Opposition Party for the first time. The NDP deployed NationalField (, the private social network that helped elect a President in 2008. NDP used NationalField to connect candidates, organizers and volunteers in a revolutionary use of social media in Canadian politics.

Alex Lofton, Georgia Field Director for the Obama campaign in 2008, said that, "NationalField was a game changer for the Obama campaign - it allowed us to see in real time what was happening on the ground, see big changes in the numbers before they showed up in the polls and allowed our staff to share best practices, compete and collaborate in a simple facebook-like interface."NationalField is the private social network created to help the Obama for President 2008 campaign. The Obama campaign opted for NationalField, with its patent-pending hierarchical social network, to connect its tens of thousands of staff and hundreds of thousands of volunteers across the country. The private social network replaced outdated intranets and email organizing, and ultimately contributed to the largest margin of victory ever polled by a non-incumbent President. The NDP's Field Director Nathan Rotman found NationalField in 2009. The company signed with an exclusive contract for the Canadian federal elections, in order to help put in place NDP's strongest-ever organizing structure in Ridings across the country. It grew to be used in all key Ridings around Canada. In January 2011, NationalField was at the center of a pre-election outreach blitz campaign - targeted ridings were able to see one another's best practices and instill a sense of competition amongst them. Just as it did for Obama's campaign in 2008, NationalField played a vital role in NDP's historic win on Monday night. Just as political campaigns were among the first adopters of new technologies such as Twitter, Facebook, and YouTube, NationalField is the latest example of political campaigns adopting new technology well ahead of the curve. This technology is changing the way teams connect and share. With powerful tools that increase collaboration, open access to information, reduce emails, and eliminate meetings, campaigns using NationalField are running leaner, faster, and more coordinated than previously possible.
