EDMONTON, April 14 /CNW/ - Port Alberta's Board of Directors is pleased to announce the appointment of its first President and CEO, Wendy Cooper.

Ms. Cooper will lead the organization as it develops a long-term operational and funding plan to establish Port Alberta as the Capital Region's gateway to the world, by connecting to global markets, via air, rail, road, sea and pipeline, while expanding the organization's membership base and securing support from municipal, provincial and federal governments.

Ms. Cooper established herself as a leader in building relationships and collaborating with private sector and government organizations during her 16-year tenure as CEO of Consulting Engineers of Alberta. She brings with her a vision for Port Alberta "to work with key stakeholders to make Alberta a significant global trading partner, run by industry, for industry. Alberta can no longer afford to work in business silos, and Port Alberta will focus on collaborating with individual member companies to create value-added opportunities for wealth generation."

Ms. Cooper's appointment follows the December 2010 incorporation of Port Alberta as a non-profit company in Alberta. As part of the incorporation process, Port Alberta replaced the previous Steering Committee with an industry-led Board of Directors.

Port Alberta's Board of Directors is comprised of community leaders from member companies, including CN Rail; Canadian Pacific Rail; Edmonton Airports; Edmonton Economic Development Corporation; Momentive Specialty Chemicals Canada; Norterra; Oil Sands Development Group; ONPA Architects, trans-Port International Corporation; and Waiward Steel.

"Port Alberta's incorporation is a significant step towards realizing our vision of establishing an effective transportation hub in the capital region that will advance business competitiveness throughout Alberta," said Daryl Procinsky of ONPA Architects, the new Board Chair of Port Alberta. "Our newly-appointed Board combines industry and community leaders who are eager to serve the Alberta Capital Region through collaboration that will build success for Port Alberta and improve the economic outlook for all Albertans."

A key priority for Ms. Cooper and the Board is to execute Port Alberta's 2011 business plan that links the organization's goals to strengthen partnerships with other North American and international gateways, develop logistic services and support for businesses in the region, improve regional competitiveness, and support the energy sector's efforts to establish the Capital Region as a "Super Energy Hub" for North America.
