Plan International Canada calls on Canadians to make every drop count and support 3,000 families with clean water
Gifts of Hope offer a unique opportunity to tap into the potential of children in need on Giving Tuesday
TORONTO, Nov. 22, 2018 /CNW/ - In celebration of Giving Tuesday on November 27, Plan International Canada is rallying Canadians to donate 3,000 gifts of Clean Water for Families in developing countries through its Gifts of Hope program. The gift of clean water provides children and their families with an essential: clean water to drink, to prepare meals, and to enhance their livelihood.
"In the spirit of generosity this Giving Tuesday, we're encouraging Canadians to support families overseas access their right to clean water – something that many of us may take for granted," says Caroline Riseboro, President and CEO of Plan International Canada. "This Gift of Hope will make a positive impact on girls who will no longer have to travel long distances to find clean drinking water, keeping them safe and in school, so that they can unleash their potential."
This Giving Tuesday marks the sixth year of a global movement in the charitable sector that is dedicated to generosity and volunteering.
About the Clean Water for Families Gift of Hope
Access to clean drinking water and sanitation helps prevent waterborne illnesses and promotes sanitation. This gift provides clean water solutions that benefit whole communities, such as wells and hand-washing stations. It takes away the burden of finding safe drinking water from girls who no longer have to travel long distances every day, and also prevents them from being vulnerable to risky situations along the way. With clean water, girls no longer have to miss school.
The gift of Clean Water for Families is $80 and is a matched Gift of Hope, which means that donations are multiplied four times for a value of $400.
Water impact stats: The true weight of water
- In three years, a child in Africa, usually a girl, will walk the same distance as crossing Canada on foot – just to collect water. (UN Water)
- Women and girls in developing countries spend 25 per cent of their days collecting water for their families. (UN Water)
- 443 million school days are lost each year due to water-related illness. (UNDP)
