Over 2,000 kilograms of obsolete pesticides collected in Newfoundland and Labrador

OTTAWA, Jan. 24 /CNW/ - Farmers in Newfoundland and Labrador turned in 2,085 kilograms of unwanted or obsolete pesticide products in October 2010 for safe and environmentally responsible disposal.

"CleanFARMS(TM) is proud to offer programs that demonstrate our commitment to ensuring Canada's plant science industry's products are properly managed by ensuring unwanted and obsolete pesticides can be disposed of in an environmentally responsible way at no cost to farmers," said Barry Friesen, general manager of CleanFARMS(TM).

The Newfoundland and Labrador obsolete pesticide collection program ran from October 25 to 29 with drop-off locations in Whitbourne, Deer Lake and Grandfalls. The collection was co-sponsored by Newfoundland Labrador Environment, Agriculture and Forestry and Conservation and Newfoundland Labrador.

This was the second time the program was held in Newfoundland. The first collection in 2002 saw more than 1,600 kilograms of obsolete pesticide products collected.

This CleanFARMS(TM) program is a national, industry-initiated program designed to ensure pesticide products that are no longer useable or wanted can be disposed of in an environmentally responsible way, at no charge to the user. The program is just one element of Canada's plant science industry's commitment to environmental responsibility and stewardship.

"CleanFARMS(TM) is fortunate to have positive experiences like last year's Newfoundland and Labrador collection to build on and we are looking forward to developing new programs to help reduce, reuse, recycle and safely dispose of other agricultural wastes," said Friesen.

Since 1998 more than 1.4 million kilograms of obsolete, commercial-grade pesticides have been collected and taken to a licensed disposal facility where it is disposed of through high temperature incineration.
