BEDFORD, NS, Nov. 2, 2011 /CNW/ - Four health organizations were
recognized for their outstanding heath service leadership at Health
Association Nova Scotia's annual general meeting on Monday, October 31.
The awards recognize the great strides being made by health
organizations to foster a healthier environment and create healthier
healthcare workplaces as part of a holistic approach to improving the
health of their communities and contributing to a sustainable future
for the Nova Scotians they serve.
"We know the way to better health care is through healthy workplaces,"
says Carla Anglehart, Director of Organizational Development at Health
Association Nova Scotia and Coordinator of the Health Service
Leadership Awards. "We are extremely pleased to recognize and celebrate
these organizations' accomplishments and hope that they will be seen as
role models to other health service organizations here in Nova Scotia
and across the country."
The ARAMARK Award for Achievement in Environmental Leadership, sponsored by ARAMARK Healthcare, was awarded to the Pictou County
Health Authority. "ARAMARK Canada remains wholly committed to
environmental stewardship and green initiatives. The ARAMARK Award is
intended to recognize and reward innovation and creativity in an
organization that has made a significant effort to improve the
environment through team based and community based initiatives, as
exemplified by this year's winner, the Pictou County Health
Authority. Their efforts are truly representative of socially and
environmentally responsible leadership and clearly serve to again
affirm how Health Association Nova Scotia members are committed to
these programs and the pursuit of excellence," commented ARAMARK
Director of Business Development and presenter of the award, Andre
Vigneault. Pictou County Health Authority received a cheque for $5,000
to support ongoing green initiatives, a trophy and a plaque of
"PCHA truly has become a positive role model for a greener planet!"
added Anglehart. "The District's Green Committee engages their staff,
medical staff, community, Board of Directors and Senior Management Team
in reducing their carbon footprint. They have developed idle free
zones, streamlined communication to reduce paper usage and installed
eco-friendly lighting. They compost and have partnered with the
community to beautify their hospital grounds. They have also partnered
with Pictou County Solid Waste who they have engaged to conduct audits
of their sites and teach staff about composting, reducing, reusing and
The Innovation in Quality Worklife (QWL) Award, sponsored by Johnson Insurance, recognized three health organizations that embody the QWQHC belief that,
"a fundamental way to better healthcare is through healthier healthcare
workplaces. The health and well-being of employees and the quality of
the healthcare work environment both have a profound impact on the
effectiveness and efficiency of health service delivery." Christi
Cahill, a consultant from Johnson Inc., said, "We are very happy to
support the Quality Worklife, Quality Health care awards, which
recognize organizations that have made a difference in ensuring healthy
Northwood Homecare Incorporated was recognized for expanding their
concept of a healthy workplace beyond traditional legislative health
and safety requirements to include factors such as health and lifestyle
practices, work-life balance and the physical work environment. At Northwood, they see fostering a healthier work environment as a
priority and a partnership between Northwood and all staff.
One initiative that they are particularly proud of is their Integrated
Disability Prevention and Management System (IDPMS). Northwood
understands that a quality workplace leads to quality health outcomes
for their clients, and they received a trophy and $5,000 to support
future QWL activities in their organization.
The second QWL Award was presented to The IWK Health Centre, who
supports wellness initiatives that promote work-life balance, life-long
learning, safe and diverse environments and a team culture that rewards
staff for results and performance. One of the IWK's health initiatives
is their popular, employee-driven health and wellness challenge, "It's
All About M.E." (Move More & Eat Healthier).
Honourable mention went to Seaview Manor, the recipient of last year's
QWL award who has put the money to good use by partnering with WCB,
Shepell FGI and several local agencies to ensure staff had
opportunities to achieve or maintain a level of health and fitness.
Though there is typically no cash award for Honourable mention,
Anglehart revealed that the Health Service Leadership committee,
"agreed that there remains a clear and solid commitment to a healthy
work environment at Seaview," and presented the health organization
with a cash reward to support further efforts.
"I'd like to send a sincere thank you to our sponsors, Johnson Inc. and
Aramark. This is the third consecutive year they have provided this
opportunity for our members to receive recognition for their leadership
in the areas of quality worklife/quality healthcare and environmental
stewardship. Many of our member organizations struggle to find the
resources to dedicate to these important initiatives, and particularly
in these fiscally challenging times, the cash rewards provided by
Johnson and ARAMARK totalling $15,000 annually, support these
organizations to continue their work."
Health Association Nova Scotia is a non-profit, non-government,
membership driven association of health and community services
