Organization of CANDU Industries applauds Ontario's commitment to nuclear

Clean, reliable nuclear energy will continue to be the backbone of Ontario's electricity supply

TORONTO, Feb. 18 /CNW/ - The Organization of CANDU Industries (OCI) applauds the government of Ontario's continued commitment to maintain the province's nuclear fleet as the backbone for base load electricity supply. The announcement today about the Minister of Energy's directive to the OPA to secure base load nuclear power for half of Ontario's power supply means greater energy security, cleaner air and increased reliability for electricity consumers.

"The Ontario government's commitment to nuclear power is great news to the thousands of men and women working in Canada's nuclear industry, and great news for Ontario businesses and consumers who depend on clean, reliable and reasonably priced electricity," says OCI General Manager David Marinacci. "We are now urging the government to forge ahead and negotiate terms for the two new units so Canada's nuclear industry can maintain its competitive position for other opportunities in the marketplace."

Canada has been building reactors around the world almost continuously since the 1980s. This steady pipeline of business has kept our nuclear supply chain companies vibrant and fully mobilized. The strength of the Canadian supply chain is a considerable asset that will be enhanced by quick decisions by the Ontario government to build new reactors here in Ontario.

The Canadian nuclear industry is a $6.6 billion a year industry, generating more than $1.5 billion in federal and provincial revenues through taxes, and more than 70,000 direct, indirect and spin-off jobs. The Canadian Energy Research Institute (CERI) recently reported that Canada's exports of nuclear related materials and services totalled approximately $1.2 billion in 2008.
