Opening of Regional Travelling Exhibition on the Eastmain-1 area

NEMASKA, EEYOU ISTCHEE, May 6 /CNW/ - The Cree Regional Authority's Archaeology and Cultural Heritage Program has produced a travelling exhibition entitled Remember This - Souvenez-vous.  The grand regional opening of the exhibition will take place on Wednesday May 25,  2011, in Nemaska.

For the first time in Eeyou Istchee, a major exhibition will be travelling in the Cree communities. The exhibition consists of images, text, video and artifacts from the Eastmain -1 area. Home to the people for more than 5,000 years, this part of the Eastmain River in northern Quebec was flooded, in 2005, to produce Quebec's most valuable commodity: electricity. Prior to the flooding of the river, Cree youth and archaeologists worked with the elders to document how generations of Crees lived in this region. The elders were members of the families whose hunting lands were flooded. This travelling exhibition tells their story.

The exhibition will be shown in the communities most affected by the EM-1 project on the following dates, and will then travel to the remaining Cree communities:

Eastmain    April 4 to 16, 2011
Nemaska    May 16 to 28, 2011
Mistissini    June  3 to 18, 2011
Waskaganish   August 22  to September 3, 2011
Other Cree communities   September, 2011 to June 2012

The exhibition was produced by the Cree Regional Authority's Archaeology and Cultural Heritage Program (ACHP), with funding from the following organizations: Niskamoon Corporation, Canadian Heritage, Aanischaaukamikw Cree Cultural Institute, Cree School Board, Ministère de la Culture, des Communications et de la Condition féminine (Québec) .
