Ontario PCs Aren't Telling The Truth - And Safety Is At Risk

TORONTO, Sept. 26, 2011 /CNW/ - This morning at Conestoga College in Kitchener, Tim Hudak claimed - with a straight face - to be interested in helping Ontarians in skilled trades.  But his "1:1" scheme is all about politics and cheap labour, not about safety of workers or helping apprentices transition into work.

And on top that, he has no plan to pay for his promise.  It's not costed.

Ontario Liberals have set up the College of Trades - experts in the field - to regulate apprenticeship ratios and find ways to help move workers out of apprenticeship and into good jobs.

But don't just take out word for it.  Here's what the experts have to say about Hudak's stunt this morning:

  • "Ontario already has low apprenticeship completion rates. The policy change proposed by Mr. Hudak will only make this number lower." (Don McNichol, Training Coordinator, Joint Apprenticeship Committee Local 804, September 26, 2009)
  • "Many unscrupulous contractors use apprentices as a source of cheap labour and have no interest in seeing Ontario youth graduate to journeyperson status.  Tim Hudak is paying back his friends (Ontario Electric League) for their support without any proof that changing ratios will produce more and better quality trades people." (John Grimshaw, Executive Secretary-Treasurer, International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, September 26, 2009)
  • "I am a (red) Tory, and am very concerned about worker safety because if you proceed as planned Tim, more apprentices and journeymen will be injured, and killed on the job."  (Gavan Howe, PhD Student, electrical safety.  Open letter Daily Commercial News, September 14, 2011)

Hudak's PCs would take us backward, divided.  Only Dalton McGuinty's Ontario Liberals will take Ontario forward, together.
