Ontario Liberals Commit To Retraining Ontario Workers

Second Career Program Primed And Ready To Help Workers In A Changing Economy

TORONTO, Sept. 30, 2011 /CNW/ - Ontario Liberals highly successful Second Career program is primed and ready to help another 7,000 workers retrain this year, Premier Dalton McGuinty said today.

"These are uncertain economic times and we know from experience that change can come quickly," McGuinty said to at a roundtable with a group of Second Career students at Humber College.  "So, we'll continue to help workers get the training they need through our flagship retraining program — Second Career."

Second Career has helped reduce Ontario's unemployment rate from 9.4 to 7.5 per cent and got workers back on their feet and back to work.  Today, almost 50,000 laid-off workers have participated in retraining.  Ninety-three per cent of students have graduated with 74 per cent finding a job within a year of graduating.

"Ontario Liberals stood up with Ontario families during the last recession," McGuinty said.  "Our opponents wanted us to cut families loose, but instead we created this one-of-a-kind long-term retraining program to help laid-off workers get the training and skills needed to re-enter the workforce."

Second Career provides students with up to $28,000 to cover the cost of tuition, books, living expenses and other expenses involved with training for a new career in high demand sectors.  Before Second Career, laid-off workers could only receive support for short-term training programs.

"Ontarians need a steady hand at the tiller.  Families deserve a government that is willing to stand up with them, to help see them through the rough patches, and willing to make the investments in their future," McGuinty said. "I'm proud of our government's record on helping workers get back on their feet."

Both the Hudak PCs and the Horwath NDP voted against the Second Career program.  The Hudak PCs have $ 14 billion in unfunded giveaways and tax cuts that would mean deep cuts to hospitals and schools.  The Horwath NDP would introduce a crushing $9 billion in job-killing taxes.  Both would take us off track at the worst time.

Only the Ontario Liberals have a plan, the experience and the leadership to keep Ontario on track in perilous times in the global economy.  And only Ontario Liberals can be counted on to keep what we've built together intact — our strong schools, hospitals and services — while moving Ontario forward. Together.
