Electrovaya In Mississauga Leading the Charge Towards A Clean-Energy
MISSISSAUGA, ON, Sept. 12, 2011 /CNW/ - Only the Ontario Liberal Plan is
delivering clean, high-tech jobs for Ontario families and building
Ontario's new clean-energy economy.
"Our plan is building a highly skilled workforce so that we can
manufacture innovative clean technologies right here in Ontario," said
Premier Dalton McGuinty. "We're creating clean, high-tech jobs which
can only be done by investing in skills and education — our greatest
advantage when it comes to competing in the global economy and building
a clean-energy economy."
The Premier made his remarks following a tour of Electrovaya — the only
company in Canada that develops and manufactures cutting-edge patented
lithium ion batteries used to power electric cars. These batteries let
electric cars drive further on a single charge.
Electrovaya also builds energy storage systems — to store wind and solar
power — and is currently building the world's largest single lithium
"We're making Ontario the North American powerhouse for clean-tech
manufacturing," McGuinty said. "Our extremely competitive tax system,
our highly skilled workforce and our world-renowned Green Energy Act
are making Ontario the place to be for clean, high-tech jobs."
"Premier McGuinty has shown strong leadership in his advocacy for
Ontario businesses in the greening automotive and energy sectors," said
Dr. Sankar Das Gupta, Chair and CEO - Electrovaya Inc. "This
government's support for small and medium enterprises has helped us to
remain competitive with global competition while continuing to create
high-value green jobs here in Ontario."
Ontario is the number-one producer of cars in North America. Now the
Ontario Liberal Plan is to become the number-one producer of electric
cars. Working with companies like Electrovaya will help achieve the
goal of having one out of every 20 cars in Ontario electrically powered
"Ontario is on track for a stronger future," McGuinty said. "The
opposition would take us off track by killing our clean-energy economy
and the jobs it's creating. The Hudak PCs $14 billion hole would also
mean deep cuts to education, depriving us of the highly skilled workers
companies like Electrovaya need. The Horwath NDP would introduce a
crushing $9 billion in job-killing taxes. Both would take Ontario off
track at the worst time. Our bold plan will position Ontario to become
North America's biggest manufacturer of clean technology. This is the
way forward, together."
Only Ontario Liberals have a plan to build a clean-energy economy. From
clean-energy jobs, to high-tech innovation, to trade missions that
promote Ontario businesses and bring companies here — Ontario is
leading the way.
Ontario is home to Electrovaya — the only company in Canada that
designs, develops and manufactures cutting-edge patented lithium ion
batteries, battery systems, and battery-related products to power
electric cars and plug-in hybrid electric cars. The technology allows
electric cars to go further on a single charge by allowing more energy
to be stored in a smaller space — making it smaller, lighter and more
powerful than the competition.
Electrovaya also builds high efficiency energy storage systems — to
store power generated from wind, solar and other sources. It is
currently building the world's largest lithium ion battery to store
solar farm power.
Electrovaya has been successful in taking their high-tech innovations to
outside markets, thanks in part, to the Ontario Liberal commitment to
trade missions. In 2008, Electrovaya was successful in signing two
memoranda of understanding with China based companies. These strategic
partnerships are creating clean, high-tech jobs in Ontario and
exporting products the world wants.
Working with companies like Electrovaya is creating clean, high-tech
jobs for Ontario families while bringing clean energy to our roads —
moving Ontario even closer to becoming North America's leading maker of
The Next Generation of Cars
Ontario is already the number-one manufacturer of cars in North America.
Now Ontario Liberals are going to make Ontario the number one place for
clean energy and manufacturing. Bringing electric cars to our roads is
an important part of that plan. Ontario Liberals will accelerate the
plan to have 5 per cent of all new cars be electric by 2020. We will
do that by investing $80 million to have electric car charging stations
widely available across Ontario — making it easier and more convenient
to power these cars.
Working with Infrastructure Ontario, Ontario Liberals will encourage
public and private sectors to develop proposals to build, test and
expand charging facilities. Ontario Liberals will kick-start the
building of electric car charging infrastructure in Ontario by
providing the seed money to the projects chosen.
Making sure charging stations are conveniently located will get more
electric cars on our roads, help families save money and make our air
To make the switch to electric cars even easier, Ontario Liberals
already offer people incentives to purchase electric cars — including
an incentive of $5,000 to $8,500 and green license plates, which allow
drivers to use the province's network of HOV lanes.
Green Energy Act
Ontario Liberals are committed to attracting the right kinds of
companies in sectors that will thrive in the new, global economy.
Through the Green Energy Act, Ontario Liberals are building Ontario's
clean-energy economy. We are attracting new investment in the renewable
energy sector, creating well-paying clean-energy jobs and protecting
our environment for future generations.
At the centre of the act is the Feed-In Tarrif (FIT) program, which
provides guaranteed rates for renewable energy. It gives investors what
they are looking for — stability, certainty and our commitment that
Ontario Liberals are in this for the long term. That's why companies
are flocking to Ontario and making us the North American leader in
clean-energy production and manufacturing — most importantly — creating
thousands of jobs here.
To date, we have created 20,000 new jobs and are on track to create
50,000 new jobs by 2012. Only Ontario Liberals will ensure FIT
continues — building a clean, modern and reliable electricity system
that's keeping the lights on for families and businesses, creating
thousands of jobs, and cleaning up the air we breathe.
Introducing Ontario Businesses To The World
Ontario will remain competitive by continuing to expand and diversify
trade opportunities. Building relationships and expanding international trade has supported
about 2,000 jobs here in Ontario — adding $1.7 billion in new revenue
to our economy.
Endless opportunities exist around the world for Ontario's small-and
medium-sized businesses. Companies across Ontario are developing new,
clean-tech products that can be marketed to the world while creating
jobs for families here.
Ontario Liberals will increase support to help businesses access new
markets by doubling the amount of Premier-led trade missions from four
to eight — expanding Ontario businesses, creating jobs and growing our
