Ontario Heritage Trust launches Heritage Week 2011 in Peterborough

PETERBOROUGH, ON, Feb. 18 /CNW/ - Today, the Ontario Heritage Trust hosted a special event at Trent University to launch the province's celebrations for Heritage Week 2011, which runs from February 21 to 27.

"As a longtime Peterborough resident and the founding President of Trent University, I am very pleased that the Trust will be launching its 2011 celebrations here," said Professor Thomas H.B. Symons, Chairman of the Ontario Heritage Trust. "I urge Ontarians to celebrate the unique heritage in their communities, not only in the coming week, but throughout the year."

During Heritage Week 2011, communities across Ontario will celebrate with their own special events and activities, including exhibits, lectures, workshops, informal gatherings and tours.

"Heritage Week is an important opportunity for us to reflect upon our rich history and to recognize the organizations and volunteers across the province working to keep Ontario's stories alive and forever lasting," said Michael Chan, Minister of Tourism and Culture.

Today's event in Peterborough featured presentations, performances and a Heritage Expo showcasing local organizations and school groups. Highlights included the keynote address by Professor Thomas H.B. Symons and a special presentation titled "Ontario's Hidden Heritage" by Ron Brown, celebrated author, geographer and travel writer.

Next week, a number of Ontario Heritage Trust sites are hosting special events: free guided tours are being offered at the Elgin and Winter Garden Theatre Centre and at Enoch Turner Schoolhouse in Toronto. A series of free lectures and guided tours are also happening at Fulford Place in Brockville. In addition, on Friday, February 25, in partnership with the Trust, The Honourable David C. Onley, Lieutenant Governor of Ontario, will present the annual Lieutenant Governor's Ontario Heritage Awards at Queen's Park. Visit www.heritagetrust.on.ca for details.
