TORONTO, May 5 /CNW/ - The cream of the crop of this country's next
generation of geoscientists from universities and colleges across
Canada will be meeting in Sudbury, Ontario, over the next two weeks to
learn the essentials of the mineral exploration business.
The 26 senior students attending have been handpicked by their
respective faculties to attend an all-expenses-paid Student-Industry
Mineral Exploration Workshop (S-IMEW), organized by the Prospectors and
Developers Association of Canada (PDAC). This is the fifth year that
the workshop has been offered.
According to Scott Jobin-Bevans, PDAC president and co-founder of the
workshop, "The event is designed to attract students into the mineral
exploration industry and to give them a practical and business
perspective of mineral exploration not generally available in the
classroom. This country is a world leader in mineral exploration. If we
are to retain this predominant position, we must do everything we can
to encourage highly qualified young people to enter the industry. The
students attending this workshop are our future leaders."
Over the course of the two weeks, industry experts will be introducing
the students to a wide range of topics, including geochemistry and
geophysics, mineral economics, corporate social responsibility, and
Aboriginal participation in mineral exploration. The students will also
have the chance to tour mines in northern Ontario and Quebec.
Social events are an important component of the workshop, enabling
students to practise their networking skills. This experience stands
them in good stead for their future careers, says Krishana Narinesingh,
student liaison for the PDAC. "Many of our S-IMEW alumni credit this
workshop with connecting them with their current employers," she says.
