The Humanitarian Coalition thanks Canadians for their generous response to the relief efforts
OTTAWA, Sept. 19, 2011 /CNW/ - The HUMANITARIAN COALITION wishes to
express its deepest gratitude to Canadians for their generosity in the
face of the famine and drought currently afflicting parts of East
Africa. In the ten weeks between the launch of their appeal on July 6th and the close of the Canadian government donation matching period at
midnight on September 16, the HUMANITARIAN COALITION and its members
have raised over $12 million for East Africa relief efforts.
"Canadians are known to be among the most generous people in the world,
and they have again lived up to that reputation," said Nicolas Moyer,
Executive Director of the HUMANITARIAN COALITION. "The needs in East
Africa have been and continue to be immense, and Canadians have
answered the call for donations as our member organizations work to
respond to this crisis. The response has been truly touching."
The HUMANITARIAN COALITION consists of CARE Canada, Oxfam Canada,
Oxfam-Québec, Plan Canada and Save the Children Canada. Each
organization has extensive programs responding to the needs of millions
of people affected by the crisis in Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia and
Djibouti, from supplying water, food and education to children, to
public health programs, providing hygiene kits and working directly
with refugees in refugee camps in the region.
As the crisis unfolds in the months to come, the HUMANITARIAN COALITION
members will continue to respond with essential services for the most
vulnerable populations, including women and children, and to work with
afflicted communities as they undertake to rebuild their livelihoods.
