New partnership between TELUS and Université Laval

QUEBEC CITY, Sept. 6, 2011 /CNW Telbec/ - The rector of Université Laval, Denis Brière, and the president of TELUS Québec and TELUS Health Solutions, François Coté, confirmed today that a major partnership agreement worth $4.55 million has been signed in connection with Phase B of the Super PEPS expansion project covering the indoor soccer/football stadium.

The 20-year agreement touches on a number of areas: Stade TELUS-Université Laval, visibility among University sports teams, support for the Rouge et Or sports excellence program, as well as funding for the Leadership and Sustainable Development Scholarship Program. For rector Denis Brière, who applauds this new partnership, "the Super PEPS expansion—and the soccer/football stadium component in particular—is a major economically stimulating and motivating project that represents an important asset for the University, its community, and residents of the greater Québec City area. The business community's financial support is in addition to public funding and is essential to the success of any such large-scale institutional projects. This announcement is in line with our initial financing package that anticipates $10 million in private sector funding."

"At TELUS, our focus is on excellence. The prestigious Université Laval and its Rouge et Or athletic teams are the perfect symbol of excellence and great achievement," notes François Côté. " The 5,500 TELUS team members in Quebec are pleased to partner with the Université Laval, its athletes and its students, and to participate actively in the social and economic development of the Greater Québec City area. This partnership is particularly meaningful to us as it strengthens our presence in the Greater Québec City area. We would have never been able to honour this commitment to the local community without the trust and loyalty of our clients in this region and we want to thank them. "

The work being done at the Super PEPS university and community sports center, valued at $85 million, is divided into two components. Phase A included the expansion of the current PEPS with the addition of an Olympic-size pool, an indoor regional training center, and a 3,200 seat amphitheater/gymnasium. Phase B, which will be completed in the coming months, includes construction of a new indoor regional soccer/football center and improvements to the outdoor football stadium. Upon completion, the new structure, made of wood arches, will feature a 60 m x 100 m synthetic turf playing field that will be divisible into three training areas. It will also include service areas that can be used by the neighboring outdoor stadium (food counters, technical control room, media room, and sanitary services).

Once the project is complete, Super PEPS will be the largest sports complex in eastern Canada and will be capable of hosting international-caliber events. The new facilities will give regional and university communities the opportunity to use modern sports equipment. On a regional level, the facilities will be 70% used by residents of the greater Québec City area and will also give everyone access to a variety of sports activities.
