New gallery fills gap in Calgary art community

CALGARY, Sept. 8, 2011 /CNW/ - Calgary's art scene will undergo a bold transformation when the Esker Foundation opens its gallery doors in early 2012.

Conceived as a cultural platform for innovative and exceptional contemporary art exhibitions, the gallery's mission is to "bring a visual arts dialogue for the public within an accessible, integral and relevant destination."

"We invite visitors - regardless of age, knowledge, or background - to share a greater understanding of art and its relevance to everyday life," says Alex Keim, Gallery Director for the Esker Foundation. "We provide a place where people may discover and rediscover something about the world in unusual and enduring ways. This is an exciting new environment to experience art as individuals and as a community."

The Esker Foundation is the initiative of local philanthropists and art patrons Jim and Susan Hill. As the cornerstone of a new retail galleria in historic Inglewood, the Atlantic Art Block, the gallery features 15,000 square feet of environmentally controlled purpose built exhibition space designed by Kasian Architects and Interior Designers and operates within a LEED SILVER (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) master plan created by Abukov Kaspar Architects.

The gallery has developed a dynamic line up of art exhibitions that are free of charge to visitors, and will offer a regular and ongoing program of educational and ancillary events such as lectures and artist presentations to accompany the exhibitions. The gallery also promotes collaborations and exchanges with other Foundations and works with a national and international community of institutions concerned with the advancement and understanding of contemporary art.

"Our focus is on becoming a vital part of Calgary's cultural fabric by bringing something to the community that's never been done before in this city," says Keim. "We're part of a shifting paradigm that's based on a growing creative dialogue - one that fosters understanding and that reaches out to welcome everyone within a thoughtfully designed, unique and innovative gallery model."
