New CLT Handbook: An essential guide to "green" construction, an FPInnovations product

QUÉBEC CITY, May 11 /CNW Telbec/ - FPInnovations is pleased to launch its first guide to cross-laminated timber (CLT) applications, entitled CLT Handbook — a top-calibre reference work for the residential and non-residential construction sectors. Aimed at building professionals, it provides technical information and illustrates CLT applications adapted to current Canadian standards and codes. The CLT Handbook is available in English and French.

An innovative engineered wood product developed in Europe, CLT is gaining popularity in a number of countries for residential and non-residential applications.

According to Hervé Deschênes, FPInnovations Vice-President, "The ever-growing number of large buildings around the world that are built with CLT bear witness to the wide array of advantages that this product offers the construction sector. In Canada, CLT is becoming an increasingly popular material for multi-storey structures, that is, buildings with four or more floors. The detailed explanations contained in the CLT Handbook are the outcome of exhaustive studies and years of research and real-life testing of CLT for contemporary residential and non-residential wooden construction."

Among other characteristics, CLT offers outstanding structural, thermal, seismic and acoustic performance. It enables new open-plan designs and faster, cleaner, safer and less noisy worksites. Its competitive advantages include:

  • more environmentally friendly, healthier construction;
  • new architectural possibilities;
  • modular construction;
  • adapted systems for walls, ceilings, floors and roofs;
  • manufacturing to customer specifications;
  • high seismic performance;
  • high fire resistance;
  • swift worksite deployment, generating less construction waste and limiting nuisances for neighbours;
  • competitive handling, manpower and shipment costs.

The CLT Handbook was developed with financial support from Natural Resources Canada under the Transformative Technologies Program, which was launched in order to guide and accelerate the development of new products like cross-laminated panels and their introduction in Canada and across North America.

Numerous scientific, technical and financial consultants and contributors, both national and international, in the industrial and government sectors, were involved in creating the CLT Handbook. They include members and friends of FPInnovations, Natural Resources Canada (Canadian Forest Service), the provinces of British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Newfound and Labrador, and the Yukon government.

In the words of Pierre Lapointe, President and Chief Executive Officer of FPInnovations, "Thanks to partnerships like these we can demonstrate the viability of innovative technologies, with a view to marketing new products or developing new markets. The CLT Handbook is a green construction jewel and another example of FPInnovations' contribution to transforming the forest industry. FPInnovations is continuing to assume its leadership role by paving the way to wood-based, living solutions."
