Natural Gas is Smart Energy and Foundation of Canada's Sustainable Energy Future

OTTAWA, Feb. 14 /CNW/ - A new report released today by the Canadian Gas Association profiles examples of innovative energy technologies being developed and tested in communities across Canada and shows how natural gas is smart energy and a foundation of Canada's clean energy future.

"Natural Gas: Our Place in Canada's Sustainable Energy Future", a report produced by the Canadian Gas Association, says natural gas has a central place in Canada's energy mix today meeting 30 per cent of the country's energy needs.   Using illustration and examples in communities across Canada, the report shows how natural gas is smart energy and a foundation of Canada's sustainable energy future.

"Natural gas is abundantly available, affordable, safe, reliable, and a clean source of energy. That's why over six million customers representing well over half the Canadian population rely on it today for heat and power in homes, apartments, buildings, businesses, hospitals and schools," said Timothy Egan, President of the Canadian Gas Association.  "This report illustrates two key points: (i) natural gas has exceptional versatility, and (ii) the natural gas distribution industry has remarkable infrastructure and connection to customers.  Combined, these position the industry to deliver unique advantages to Canadians," continued Egan.

Separated into three sections - "in buildings", "in communities", and "on the road" - the report reviews the role of natural gas in each of these areas.

In buildings: For space and water heating, cooking, drying, in combination with renewables like solar and ground source energy, and for on-site electricity generation, natural gas provides reliable, affordable and clean energy to houses and buildings.
In communities: Natural gas and the natural gas pipeline network will contribute to a smart energy grid by enabling the use of locally available energy like renewable natural gas, distributed power generation, and district energy.
On the road: Clean, reliable natural gas reduces costs and emissions for municipal fleets, heavy-duty trucking, and return to base shippers.

"Looking forward Canada's energy mix will diversify and that's important to ensure sustainable energy supply, reduce energy costs for consumers, and to achieve greater efficiency," said Egan.  "Natural gas will continue to be a primary energy source for heat and power, but what's exciting is the future role that natural gas and natural gas utility companies have to enable innovative alternative energy and alternative technology.

CGA is the voice of Canada's natural gas distribution industry and its members are distribution companies, transmission companies, equipment manufacturers and other service providers.  Today, natural gas meets 30% of Canada's energy needs and Canadian natural gas distribution companies serve approximately 6.2 million customers - homes, businesses and industry - across Canada.
