Monique F. Leroux Appointed Member of a UN Advisory Group

LÉVIS, QC, Nov. 3, 2011 /CNW Telbec/ - The United Nations (UN) has invited the Chair of the Board, President and CEO of Desjardins Group (, Monique F. Leroux, to serve as a member of the Advisory Group for the International Year of Cooperatives 2012 alongside government officials and spokespersons from cooperative organizations and research institutes.

The members of the Advisory Group will act as consultants to members of the UN with respect to the activities taking place during the International Year of Cooperatives. Advisors will support efforts to promote cooperation and mobilize global players throughout 2012. For Ms. Leroux, this invitation is a reflection of Desjardins Group's reputation and its place in the global cooperative world.

While in New York this week, Monique F. Leroux took part in UN activities to mark the launch of the International Year of Cooperatives 2012.

Before an audience of cooperative movement leaders from around the world, Ms. Leroux shared her thoughts on the resilience of the cooperative model, global financial reform and regulatory control: "Cooperative values are now more than ever a response to the economic and social challenges of our world. Recent history has shown us that greed to the detriment of the people is a dangerous path for our economies. From now on, we need to put human capital ahead of financial capital."

Delivering a speech during an activity put on by the International Co-operative Alliance, Ms. Leroux also advocated that regulators need to take the nature of the cooperative model into account. "The business model of a cooperative, its mission and governance, have nothing to do with the capitalist business model. Consequently, I believe the regulatory framework to which they are subject should be adapted to their reality."

Ms. Leroux also took this opportunity to invite the international cooperative community to attend the 2012 International Summit of Cooperatives, which Desjardins Group is co-hosting in Quebec City and Lévis from October 8 to 12.
