Mobilicity celebrates year of saving Canadians millions of dollars on wireless bills

Founding customers speak to the testament of new mobile carrier's value, network reliability and bright future

TORONTO, May 13 /CNW/ - Mobilicity will celebrate its first anniversary this weekend; a year highlighted by five market launches, $215 million of new financing, over 700 retail locations and thousands of Canadians who choose the new carrier daily to bring down their cost of wireless without sacrificing a quality mobile experience.

"Mobilicity has saved Canadian wireless consumers millions of dollars over the past year and we'll save them millions more in the years to come," said Mobilicity CEO Dave Dobbin. "It's amazing to think that reducing wireless bills can help improve people's quality of life, but Canadians have been paying outrageous rates for far too long with Big Three carriers."

As case in point, Dobbin pointed to a number of founding customers who have been with the unlimited carrier since it launched in Toronto, last spring.

  • Constructing a better wireless deal: Roger Angeles joined Mobilicity after going without a mobile phone for a year because he couldn't afford the $600 monthly bills he would get on his $45 plan. The 24-year-old construction worker had to pay a penalty to cancel the remainder of his two-year contract with a Big Three carrier, but says the 200 daytime minutes in his plan weren't enough. He was also unknowingly racking up data charges. He bought a Mobilicity flip phone, signed up for the unlimited $35 plan and started using his flip phone like he would a flat-rate landline. "I used the phone all day and I didn't go over (my plan). That was it for me. I'll never have to worry about a $600 bill again."
  • Happy to say hello: Facilities Manager Kacey-Ann Baptiste's mobile phone used to be so expensive, she stopped answering calls halfway through her billing cycle because she used up all the included voice minutes on her basic talk plan. Baptiste, 25, says her $50 plan usually ended up costing her $70 to $80 a month. After hearing about Mobilicity through a friend, she signed up for its $35 unlimited talk and text service, which included province-wide calling, along with a host of premium calling features.  "I can answer any call now - even if I don't know the number (of the caller). I can afford to say 'hello'," Baptiste says. "I even called my cousin in Ottawa for 30 minutes. It was a freedom I never had before."
  • Bread-winner: Former Australia resident Vineet Sharma couldn't find an affordable wireless plan in Canada until he found Mobilicity. With no local credit history, he had been refused service on a Big Three carrier's post-paid plan and was offered a more expensive pre-paid plan. "They were going to charge me $30 a month for nothing."

He ended up getting a job as a sales analyst using his Mobilicity smartphone to schedule interviews while getting settled in Toronto. Now, he enjoys unlimited talk, text and data service, using his Android smartphone to check email and social networking sites, like Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter daily. "I get updates whenever I have time. I also check the news to see what's happening around the world."
