Media Advisory - Newfoundland dermatologists to host free skin cancer screening at Avalon Mall on May 13th

ST. JOHN'S, May 10, 2013 /CNW/ - On Monday, May 13th St John's dermatologists will be holding a free skin cancer screening open to the public to create awareness about the importance and early detection and prevention of skin cancer and demonstrate how to conduct at-home self-exam.

Why To create awareness about importance of early detection by conducting regular at-home self-exams


  • Newfoundland has one of the highest rates of melanoma skin cancer in men in Canada (source: Canadian Cancer Statistics 2011).
  • Newfoundland and Nova Scotia have the highest death rates for melanoma in men in Canada at 4 deaths per 100,000, compared to 2 deaths per 100,000 Saskatchewan, Quebec and New Brunswick.
  • Research shows that 53% of melanoma skin cancers are discovered by the patients themselves and a further 17% by their family members.
