Media Advisory - Joint College Learning Centre Marries Education with Infrastructure

PICKERING, ON, June 20, 2011 /CNW/ - Today, Durham College and Centennial College announced their partnership in establishing a joint learning centre at the foot of the soon-to-be completed pedestrian bridge in dynamic downtown Pickering.

This special purpose, two-storey building will offer graduate certificate and continuing education programs for the fall 2012 semester.  The centre will be comprised of classrooms, a computer lab, student space, and offices. "We're absolutely delighted to be reaching out to our friends and neighbours in Pickering as part of this unique joint venture with the City and Durham College," said Ann Buller, President and CEO of Centennial College in Toronto. "Nothing ties communities better than their mutual interest in the betterment of lives through education. Our project here at the Pickering Town Centre will open doors to new career opportunities for local residents."

With a direct connection to the Pickering GO station, Durham College and Centennial College hope to attract students from across Durham Region and neighbouring GTA municipalities.  "As president of Durham College, I am extremely pleased to be part of today's announcement of the establishment and development of a joint learning centre," said Don Lovisa, President, Durham College. "This new partnership with the City of Pickering and Centennial College will provide exciting, unique and convenient educational opportunities for future students in Pickering and the GTA."

This joint venture represents the very first public post-secondary presence in Pickering's 200-year history.  "We are thrilled to make this milestone announcement during our Bicentennial year.  I wish to thank Centennial College and Durham College for their confidence and investment in our community," said Mayor Dave Ryan.  "Pickering is renowned as a great place to live, work and play; and with this new centre of learning, we want to also be regarded as an easily accessible and preferred place to further or enhance one's post-secondary education."

As the gateway city to the east GTA, Pickering (population 94,000) is strategically located where Toronto, York and Durham Regions meet.  Pickering is an affluent community that is steeped in history, natural beauty and small town charm with all the amenities and services that a big city has to offer.  The City of Pickering is considered a municipal leader in fiscal management, service delivery, sustainability and the environment; and offers a wealth of sports, leisure and recreation opportunities to its residents.  Pickering has been recognized by Profit magazine as one of the ten best cities in Canada for growth companies and received the 2008 FCM-CH2M Hill Sustainable Community Planning Award.
