Media Advisory - Exiled Belarusian presidential candidate Ales Michalevic to visit Toronto

TORONTO, Nov. 23, 2011 /CNW/ - The first European to win the John Humphrey Award, exiled Belarusian presidential candidate, Ales Michalevic, will visit Toronto tomorrow, Thursday, November 24th, as part of his cross country speaking tour.

A candidate in the 2010 Belarusian presidential election, Mr. Michalevic was arrested and wrongfully imprisoned by the government at the end of his campaign. He was held for more than two months and subjected to torture for the duration. Since March 2011, he has been living in exile in the Czech Republic and Poland after fleeing Belarus for fear of reprisals and his life.

During his time in Toronto, Mr. Michalevic will speak with various groups, including Belarusians living in Toronto, about issues related to human rights and democracy in Belarus. On Thursday November 24th, Mr. Michalevic will be recognized for his courage and commitment to freedom of expression at the Canadian Journalists for Freedom of Expression Gala.  On Friday, November 25th, he will speak to students and academics at the University of Toronto's Munk School of Global Affairs.

His stop in Toronto is part of Mr. Michalevic's tour of major Canadian cities, including:

  • Montreal

  • Ottawa
  • Toronto
  • Vancouver
