Manitoba youth get up, get out and get active

Coca-Cola supports local activities with nearly $100,000 to inspire youth to lead active lifestyles

WINNIPEG, Nov. 29, 2011 /CNW/ - From curling to cheerleading and hockey, Sogo Active inspires youth across Manitoba to become more active all year-round. Working with Recreation Connections Manitoba (RCM), through Sogo Active, Coca-Cola Canada has provided nearly $100,000 to local and provincial organizations to motivate youth to be physically active.

Coca-Cola Canada has partnered with ParticipACTION, the national voice of physical activity and sport participation, to develop Sogo Active.  Sogo Active is a $5 million, five-year national youth active living program that has supported 2000 community organizations, and 27,000 youth, ages 13 to 19, across Canada to take up some form of physical activity.

"The support of Coca-Cola Canada and ParticipACTION over the past three years has provided youth across Manitoba with the opportunity to get active, have fun and feel better about themselves," says Cory Jackson, executive director, Recreation Connections Manitoba.  "There is an inactivity crisis among our youth today and Sogo Active provides a real opportunity for communities to make a difference!" Using a 'by youth, for youth' approach, Sogo Active works to inspire teens to incorporate physical activity into their day-to-day lives and connect them to local community organizations.

In Manitoba, programs have been supported or created through a number of organizations like the Niverville Recreation Committee, St. Boniface Diocesan High School and the Virden Breakfast Club.  Through these local grants, youth can pursue physical activity challenges at all levels like curling, hockey, dancing, cheerleading, cycling and snowshoeing to name a few.

"Coca-Cola Canada understands the benefits that active healthy living offers young Canadians," says Kelly Murumets, president and CEO, ParticipACTION. "Through this private/not-for-profit partnership, we are able to inspire and support thousands of teens to increase their physical activity levels to help them meet the recommended 60 minutes per day."

"Promoting a balanced and active lifestyle is a key part of our Live Positively platform," says Paul Howden, sales unit vice president, Western Canada, Coca-Cola Refreshments Canada. "We are strong believers that we can all accomplish more working together with partners like ParticipACTION, than working alone."

Through Sogo Active, communities can help fight Canada's inactivity crisis by encouraging youth to get up and get active.  For more information, visit
