Leaders of Renewable Energy Sector Convene for Second Annual REFF-Canada Conference

Event features top financiers and renewable energy experts to discuss opportunities for clean
energy initiatives in Canada

TORONTO, Feb. 16 /CNW/ - The top financiers of renewable energy across Canada will gather in early April at the second annual Renewable Energy Finance Forum - Canada 2011, on April 5-6, 2011 at the Radisson Hotel Admiral Toronto - Harbourfront, in Toronto, Ontario.  Registration for the event is open and the deadline for the early bird offer is fast approaching and will end on February 25, 2011.

The two-day event will convene an anticipated 200 delegates and industry leaders from financial institutions and the renewable energy industry responsible for financing and developing projects across Canada. These delegates will discuss the opportunities for venture capital, private equity and project finance in clean energy technology companies.

The conference will feature representatives from top investment institutions - CIBC, Manulife Financial, RBC Capital Markets, National Bank Financial - who will speak on project financing and opportunities in global financial markets that impact clean energy in Canada. Particular attention will be drawn to Ontario's Green Energy and Economy Act, which has been in place for more than a year, and how it has impacted the province's energy sector including the timeline and criteria for projects being developed.

Conference Program Includes: 

Government policy and initiatives: An interactive panel session in which representatives from various provinces will discuss the latest developments and look at the prospects for developing renewable energy programs in the future. The panelists include, British Columbia - Janice Larson, Director, Renewable Energy Development, BC Ministry of Energy, Mines and Petroleum Resources; Ontario - Susan Lo, Assistant Deputy Minister, Renewables and Energy Efficiency Division, Ministry of Energy; Quebec - Mario Gosselin, Deputy Minister for Energy, Quebec Ministry of Natural Resources; Nova Scotia - Bruce Cameron, Director, Renewable and Sustainable Energy Division, NS Department of Energy.

The financial perspective from domestic to international: Canadian federal chartered banks and a selection of international banks will provide answers to some of the current questions facing the industry about developing renewable energy projects in Canada. Questions covered include, what are the banks' criteria when funding a project? The session will be chaired by Lewis T Smith, Partner, Stikeman Elliott LLP. Panelists for this session include Robert Nicholson, Managing Director - Energy, RBC Capital Markets; Antonio Garcia Mendez, Head of Project and Acquisition Finance - Energy, Santander; Geraint Breeze, Executive Director, Project Finance & Infrastructure, CIBC; Stéphane Carrière, Managing Director, Dexia Credit Local S.A.; Bill Harrison, Vice President, Head of Renewables Structured Finance - North America, BBVA.

Manufacturers' and contractors' perspective: Leading industry executives will discuss the current challenges manufacturers face when operating in Canada, such as analysing the recent drop in technology prices. Speakers include: Simon Olivier, General Manager, Power Generation for Canada and N-E United States, GE Energy; Milfred Hammerbacher, President and CEO, Canadian Solar Solutions Inc; Nicole Tucker, Senior Manager, Supply Chain Management, Energy Sector, Siemens Canada Limited; Adam Borgatti, Director, Energy and Infrastructure, Aecon Concessions; Gareth Brown, Senior Renewable Energy Consultant, Sgurr Energy.

Demonstrating Available Funding: how developers have ensured access to financing: Following insight from the major investment banking players and project financiers in the renewable energy sector, this panel will focus on the financing of renewable energy projects from a developer's point of view. This session will be chaired by Iain Watson, Co-Head Clean Technology Group, Corporate & Investment Banking, National Bank Financial. Speakers include: Kent Brown, President and Chief Executive Officer, BluEarth Renewables Inc.; Michael Crawley, President, International Power Canada Inc; Tony Anderson, Chief Financial Officer, Northland Power Inc; Donald McInnes, Chief Executive Officer, Plutonic Power; Vick Dusik, Chief Financial Officer, Run of River Power Inc.

Solar energy: Leading renewable energy experts will explore solar technology and the criteria required to guarantee financial support, as well as financial and sustainability drivers amidst the current financial environment. This session will be chaired by Elizabeth McDonald, President, Canadian Solar Industries Association. Speakers include: Paul Ghetti, President & CEO, Solar Income Fund Inc; Natalia Hahn, National Sustainability Manager, IKEA Canada; Ryan Monteath, National Facilities Manager, IKEA Canada; Peter Nixon, Vice President, Business Development and Finance,Tioga Energy.

Wind energy: Turning the focus to wind energy, this session will delve into the investment opportunity of renewable energy, current wind projects across Canada and the U.S. and how to finance an off-shore wind project. This session will be chaired by Adarsh Mehta, Chair, CanWEA. Speakers include: Jeff Jenner, President & CEO, Sprott Power Corporation; Alejandro Salvador, Chief Financial Officer, Acciona Energy North America; Uwe Roeper, President, ORTECH Power.

Updating transmission and the grid to ensure energy security: Leading experts will discuss how system needs change with an increase of solar and wind energy as well as the bankability of geothermal projects and increased pressure in the demand for grid space. This session will be chaired by Tania Ensor, Senior Vice President, National Corporate Practice Lead, Weber Shandwick. Speakers include: Wesley Stevens, Assistant Director, Navigant Consulting, John McIlveen, Director and Treasurer, Canadian Geothermal Association.
