MONTREAL, June 7, 2011 /CNW Telbec/ - The Canada Green Building Council (CaGBC) has awarded LEED Gold certification to the first tower of the residential Le Vistal complex (www.vistalcondos.com), located on the south shore of Nuns' Island. This is a first in Quebec for a high-rise residential building. Inaugurated in September 2008 by the real estate development company Proment Corporation, Vistal 1 is a 25-storey building with 160 units. The complex includes a second tower, for which Proment Corporation also hopes to obtain LEED Gold certification.

"The criteria for obtaining gold standard LEED certification are very demanding, and we are proud to have attained the objective we set ourselves when we first conceived Le Vistal", said Samuel Gewurz, President of Proment Corporation, one of the pioneers of green building in Quebec.

To obtain LEED accreditation, buildings must be constructed according to six criteria: localization on a sustainable site, efficient management of water, efficiency in terms of energy and atmosphere, conservation of materials and resources, quality of the indoor environment, and innovation in design.

"The project must be finished before the Canada Green Building Council can perform the appropriate checks to ensure the building has been constructed and operates in line with sustainable development standards", explains Louis-Joseph Papineau, LEED AP engineer and VP of Development and Construction at Proment Corporation. The trend for constructing buildings in line with sustainable development standards is only just beginning in Quebec: today, the province has fifty-two LEED projects, and just seven have obtained LEED Gold accreditation.

As soon as the Vistal complex had been launched, its condominiums quickly sold out. Today, the promoter is experiencing similar success with the first two buildings of the green neighbourhood Pointe-Nord (www.pointenord.com), ZUNI and Evolo, and hopes for more of the same with Pavilion Evolo, which is due to be launched this week. Proment Corporation has obtained LEED ND (Neighbourhood Development) Gold certification from the US Green Council Building for this combined residential and commercial neighbourhood. Located on Nuns' Island, on the shores of the St. Lawrence River, the new Point-Nord area, valued at 700 million dollars, offers the best of both nature and urban life, with Downtown Montreal just five minutes away.

Proment Corporation intends to carry on its environmental work by applying the principles of sustainable development to further real-estate projects. "We hope that our success in green building will encourage other developers to go down the path of sustainable development", concludes Samuel Gewurz.
