Labour arbitrator, rights activist to embark on cross-country bike trek for Burmese aid

The ride begins at 8:00 AM on June 2nd from the North Vancouver Seabus Station

VANCOUVER, May 31, 2011 /CNW/ - The Just Aid Foundation (JAF) announced today that one of its directors, labour arbitrator Rod Germaine, and a fellow supporter of the Foundation, Soe Naing, will be heading to Halifax by bicycle on Thursday (June 2) to raise funds for urgent healthcare services on the Thai-Burma border.

The JAF, a registered foundation located in Vancouver, raises money and awareness on behalf of the Mae Tao Clinic and its healthcare programs for the people of Burma in western Thailand. The Mae Tao Clinic, founded by Dr. Cynthia Maung, provides healthcare to Burmese refugees, the internally displaced and migrant workers from Burma who have been forced to flee their country because of action taken against them by the military dictatorship. In September 2009, the clinic's work was honoured by Vancouver city council with a special proclamation, "Dr. Cynthia Maung Day."

Germaine is treasurer of the JAF. Soe Naing made his way to Canada after spending years in a refugee camp following his flight from Burma. A strong supporter of the JAF, he works at Kwantlen Polytechnic University and is a member of the BC Government and Service Employees' Union.

"I wanted to do something this year to bring more attention to the JAF and the work it does to assist the people of Burma, who are in such desperate need of assistance," said Germaine.

"Because I was returning this summer to my law school alma mater in Halifax for a reunion, the thought came to me that I should do both. To have an opportunity to raise awareness and money with my friend Soe Naing, a man who has been through some of the hardest challenges any human would ever have to face, was an additional plus for this decision."
