Juravinski Cancer Centre Foundation gets a healthy dose of support from TELUS and its customers

TELUS' Go Pink campaign raises more than $50,000 for new mammography room and digital mammography equipment at the CIBC Breast Assessment Centre

HAMILTON, ON, Feb. 15 /CNW/ - TELUS' Go Pink campaign has raised more than $50,000 for the Juravinski Cancer Centre. Combined with employee and corporate donations, the national campaign raised more than $2.45 million for women's breast health across Canada.

In May 2010, TELUS announced it would donate $25 from every pink Blackberry sold across Canada to support digital mammography in regional hospitals. Local funding from the cause-marketing partnership will help to cover the costs of a new mammography room and state-of-the-art digital mammography equipment at the planned CIBC Breast Assessment Centre.

The Centre, to be located on-site at Juravinski Hospital and Cancer Centre, will be the most comprehensive assessment facility in the region for women with a breast abnormality or at high risk of developing breast cancer. Expected to open in 2013, the Centre will serve women of all ages, providing a complete diagnostic assessment in a single visit, including all tests necessary to accurately diagnose breast cancers.

"Digital mammography is an incredibly important tool in the detection of breast cancer," said Roger Ali, vice-president Development, Juravinski Cancer Centre Foundation. "This support funding from TELUS will enable us to provide broader access to this innovative technology and help find cancers while they are smaller and less likely to have spread."

Traditional mammogram X-rays do not penetrate dense breast tissue, making it more difficult to interpret results and detect tumours. Digital mammography equipment produces more accurate results with advanced capabilities to generate magnified images of breast tissue to help with the early detection of breast cancer.

Jill Schnarr, vice-president of TELUS Community Affairs, said replacing existing analog mammography machines with state-of-the-art digital machines that are better able to detect smaller cancers in denser tissue will save lives, save taxpayer dollars by reducing re-testing due to inconclusive tests, and save thousands of women from having to undergo waits between an initial inconclusive tests and further procedures.

"TELUS is thrilled we can partner with our customers in Hamilton to help fund this important technology for the Juravinski Cancer Centre in Hamilton. I know from personal experience the wait for a new test after an inconclusive result from an older style analog machine can be agonizing," Ms. Schnarr said. "Digital technology would have allowed the radiologist to get a better look the first time."

The Go Pink campaign will help buy new digital mammography machines or other innovative breast cancer technology for healthcare facilities in communities across Canada, including: BC Women's Hospital & Health Centre Foundation, Alberta Cancer Foundation, Saskatchewan Cancer Agency, CancerCare Manitoba, Princess Margaret Hospital Foundation in Toronto, The Ottawa Hospital Foundation, Segal Cancer Center at the Montreal Jewish General Hospital, the Juravinski Cancer Centre Foundation in Hamilton, and QEII Health Sciences Centre in Halifax.

About the CIBC Breast Assessment Centre
The Juravinski Cancer Centre Foundation is leading the fundraising campaign to build and equip the CIBC Breast Assessment Centre. This $5-million Centre will be the most comprehensive assessment facility in the region and will provide breast cancer screening and diagnostic services to women of all ages from Brant, Burlington, Haldimand, Hamilton, Niagara and Norfolk. Patients referred to the Centre will undergo a complete assessment during a single visit, with final results and, if needed, a treatment plan available in five days. The Centre will also be one of only a handful of facilities in the country offering genetic testing for those with a family history of breast cancer.
