Juno Award Winning Singer-songwriter John Bottomley Dies Unexpectedly at age 50

TORONTO AND VANCOUVER, April 11 /CNW/ - John Bottomley, winner of the 1992 Juno award for most promising male vocalist, passed away on Wednesday April 6, 2011 near his home that he shared with partner Angela Muellers in Brackendale, British Columbia. Bottomley left for a walk from his home early Wednesday morning and when he failed to return, a search was undertaken by local authorities. The coroner's report has concluded that John took his own life and a family spokesperson has confirmed that he had recently been suffering from depression.

Bottomley was born in Toronto, Ontario in 1960. His father (Terence Bottomley) was a member of the Canadian Forces which provided Bottomley and his brothers (Paul, Chris and Kevin) with the opportunity to experience a wide range of cultural experiences that shaped his love and compassion for people, music, literature and the natural world.  Bottomley was also profoundly influenced by his mother (Denise Bottomley), a piano and school teacher, who recalls Bottomley requesting a set of Dickens novels for his 21st birthday.

Bottomley established his professional career with the band Tulpa, comprised of his brother Chris Bottomley and Mike Severin. Tulpa were pioneers of Toronto's Queen Street indie-rock scene and were one of the first Canadian bands to regularly play the legendary CBGB in New York City. Bottomley launched a solo career in 1990 with the release of "Library of the Sun" which caught the attention of the main stream music industry. In 1992 BMG Music Canada released the Juno award winning album "Songs with the Ornamental Hermits" and the follow-up album "Blackberry" which produced the top ten hit song "You Lose You Gain" and also earned Bottomley a 1996 SOCAN Songwriter Award. His latest CD, "The Healing Dream", was released in November 2010 and the video for the title song can be found on his website at www.johnbottomley.net.

In addition to Bottomley's musical success, he was also a published poet and illustrator.

Bottomley was a deeply compassionate person who was concerned with the growing turmoil in global events. Bottomley's Facebook status update on tuesday evening declared that "What the world needs is the shining light of love." To those that knew him and know his work, Bottomley is and will remain that shining light.

Friends will be received at the Gilbert MacIntyre and Son Funeral Home, Hart Chapel, 1099 Gordon Street, Guelph, Ontario, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. on Tuesday April 12, 2011. Bottomley's funeral will take place on April 13, 2011 at Church of Our Lady (28 Norfolk Street) at 11 am. in Guelph, Ontario.
