Building on a strong foundation of support

TORONTO, Feb. 17 /CNW/ - Junior Achievement Canada Foundation is pleased to announce that Mr. Jacques Ménard has joined the Board of Directors effective February 2011. As a business leader and committed philanthropist in Canada, Mr. Ménard will play a key role in helping the Foundation achieve its mandate to provide funding, role models and support to Junior Achievement in its efforts to provide financial literacy, entrepreneurship and work readiness education to all young Canadians.

"Jacques is an excellent addition to the Junior Achievement Foundation Board," said Mr. Jos Wintermans, Chair, Junior Achievement Canada Foundation Board and President & CEO, LifeLabs International. "This Board will greatly benefit from his knowledge, expertise and personal commitment, which will build on the strength represented at the Junior Achievement Foundation Board."

Mr. Ménard is currently the Chairman of BMO Nesbitt Burns and President of BMO Financial Group, Quebec.  He has played an active role in the issue of financial literacy for Canadians, and is Vice-Chair of the Task Force on Financial Literacy created by the Minister of Finance of Canada. 

For more than 10 years, the Junior Achievement of Canada Foundation has worked with donors and the community to raise the funds necessary to ensure that Junior Achievement can continue to reach Canadian youth with programs and services. The Foundation Board comprising of Canadian business leaders in diverse industries and management positions oversees the management and strategic direction of the organization.

"With Jacques' enthusiasm, experience and commitment to youth, the Foundation Board will continue to build upon Junior Achievement's reach and impact as we prepare young Canadians to succeed," said Mr. Wintermans. "On behalf of the Board of Directors, I would like to welcome Jacques." 

The Junior Achievement of Canada Foundation is the national fundraising organization for Junior Achievement of Canada. The Foundation implements a variety of fundraising activities on behalf of Junior Achievement, including the annual Canadian Business Hall of Fame Gala Dinner Induction Ceremony, which celebrates the accomplishments of business leaders and highlights their role in mentoring Canada's future leaders. 

Junior Achievement of Canada is the largest national provider of financial literacy education in Canada. Thanks to the generous funding and time contributions made to the Foundation, Junior Achievement is able to provide youth with the essential skills they need to ensure sound money management and decision making throughout their lives. Last year alone, more than 230,000 young Canadians experienced a Junior Achievement program from 13,029 committed business mentors. 

Mr. Ménard is currently a director of Claridge Inc., the Montreal Heart Institute, the Montreal Symphony Orchestra, the Institute for Research on Public Policy, the Trudeau Foundation and the McDonald Stewart Foundation.  Mr. Ménard has been appointed Chancellor of Concordia University on January 18, 2011 and is a member of the Task Force on Competitiveness, Productivity and Economic Progress of the Rotman School of Management at the University of Toronto.

In 2009, Mr. Ménard received the Public Policy Forum Testimonial Award and was recognized as a Great Montrealer by the Board of Trade of Metropolitan Montreal. Mr. Ménard is an Officer of the Order of Canada and of the National Order of Québec.
