Donated Bus Will Double Saint John Y's Transportation Capacity

SAINT JOHN, NB, May 17 /CNW/ - Over the past several years, the Saint John Y has faced challenges in meeting the growing transportation needs of its program members. Today, Irving Oil met this significant need with the donation of a new, customized 20-passenger mini-bus.

"We transport nearly 10,000 children a year throughout Saint John. Our previous van was not keeping up with the demand and we weren't sure how we were going to meet this growing need - then Irving Oil stepped in and made it happen. We're so appreciative of this significant gift, one of the largest corporate donations outside of a capital campaign, and what it will mean to the community," said Shilo Boucher, Acting CEO of the Saint John Y. "At the Y, it's important that our programs are open to everyone in the community, but for those participants at or below the poverty line, transportation is one of the many barriers they face."

As the Y approaches its busiest time of year, the new bus is anticipated to double the amount of passengers it can transport to programs at over 16 locations throughout the community.

"With the Y's huge geographical reach and its goal of being open to all community members, their transportation challenges affected not only the Y and its ability to offer important programs but it directly affected many children and families all over the city," says Carolyn Van der Veen, Irving Oil. "We believe in the value of the Y's programs for all ages, and feel everyone should have the opportunity to participate. We're thrilled this new bus will help open up new opportunities that may not have been possible otherwise for some in the community."

During the summer, the Y's day camps and residential camps require the vehicle to transport children to recreational facilities. Throughout the school year, the Y does three daily runs to various local schools; however service to some of these schools had to be discontinued due to the limited space of the previous vehicle. For many youth, the Y's transportation provides them with the only access to these recreational facilities due to financial and accessibility barriers to other transportation options. After today's unveiling, the new bus will begin operations immediately.
