London, Ontario Starts the New Year with the Biggest Drop in Hotel Rates
SAN FRANCISCO, Jan. 19, 2011 /CNW/ -- Hotwire.com®, a leading discount travel site, today announced the results of the January 2011 Hotwire® Canadian Hotel Rate Report, which features the top five cities in Canada where hotel rates have dropped the most. When combined with Hotwire's already discounted prices, the Hotel Rate Report helps guide customers to the destinations that can maximize their travel dollars. For the most part, 2010 was a bargain-traveler's dream, but prices at a number of popular destinations continue to go even lower here in 2011.
London, Ontario rises to the number one spot with a seven percent drop -- the steepest drop in hotel rates in Canada this month. The city has been slow to recover economically and with tourism down, hotel rooms are vacant. By taking advantage of the great savings on the city's unsold rooms, consumers can save their wallets to enjoy the local attractions London has to offer instead. Storybook Gardens in Springbank Park hosts various family friendly animal exhibits, rides, games, and play areas. Take the Labatt Brewery Tours at the Simcoe Street Brewery or enjoy walks along part of the Thames Valley Trail, a 109-km hiking trail that follows the Thames and North Thames Rivers.
There are plenty of other fun winter destinations travelers can choose from this month that are also featuring low prices. Banff, Alberta; Quebec City, Quebec; and Vancouver, British Columbia, have also topped this month's listing respectively as hoteliers in those cities are dropping rates in order to attract travelers that may have been deterred by the eastern storms.
Hotwire is able to find great deals because it works with hotels, airlines and car rental companies to fill unsold inventory. This means customers will find incredibly low deals on Hotwire, especially in cities like those on the Hotel Rate Report where prices are unseasonably low.
When compared to the same time last year, the top five hotel price reductions for January 2011 include:
Rank Hotel Market Price Drop Deal, CAD$/Night
1 London, ON -7% 3.5-star $73
2 Banff, AB -4% 3-star $91
3 Quebec City, QC -2% 3.5-star $83
4 Vancouver, BC -1% 3.5-star $84
5 Niagara Falls, ON -1% 4-star $95
"If you're not snowed in, there's no reason to be staying home," said Clem Bason, President of the Hotwire Group. "Whether it's relaxing in Banff's Upper Hot Springs, the kick off of the Quebec Winter Carnival, or simply hitting the slopes, travelers throughout Canada can take advantage of low hotel rates and enjoy a wealth of popular tourist destinations for winter fun."
About the Hotwire Hotel Rate Report
The Hotwire Hotel Rate Report will run results during the first week of each month. Results are calculated by looking at Hotwire stay dates for select regions in the current month, and comparing prices in the current month against Hotwire prices in the same month in the prior year. Prices are compared within the same star rating categories for consistency, and the percent change in price for each region is generated as an overall average of the changes in those categories. The prices in the chart above are examples for a particular star rating category within that market, and actual prices may be higher or lower than the example that is provided.
