Home Hardware Dealers Plant Trees from Coast to Coast to Celebrate National Tree Day

ST. JACOBS, ON, Sept. 21, 2011 /CNW/ - Home Hardware Dealers across the country are celebrating the first National Tree Day today by planting trees in 22 communities from coast to coast as part of the company's longstanding relationship with Tree Canada.

"With over 1,080 stores across Canada, Home Dealers are proud to give back to their communities," said Paul Straus, President and CEO, Home Hardware Stores Limited. "Trees help to conserve energy, improve air and water quality and provide wildlife habitat.  This project aligns perfectly with our company's ongoing efforts to be environmentally responsible."

September 21, 2011 marks the first National Tree Day in Canada. On March 2, 2011 the House of Commons passed Motion-575 to declare the Wednesday of National Forest Week, as National Tree Day. National Tree Day is celebrated across the country with tree dedications, plantings, educational workshops, outdoor education walks, interpretive days, schoolyard plantings and seminars.

"We are proud that Home Hardware is enthusiastic about this new historic day," said Michael Rosen, President of Tree Canada.  "It's fantastic to see Dealers in communities large and small, urban and rural, doing their part for the environment, and setting a great example for all Canadians."

Over the past 12 years Home Hardware has partnered with Tree Canada to improve green spaces across the country.  It is estimated that each day, one large tree gives enough oxygen to supply four people, sequesters carbon and other pollutants and can help lower heating and cooling costs up to 50%.

Home Hardware Dealers have donated over $540,000 to Tree Canada through the support of special sales. In 2011, the following Home Hardware stores will participate in tree plantings:
