Date Set For Star-Studded event at The Fairmont Banff Springs and
BANFF, AB, Nov. 29, 2011 /CNW/ - Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., Alec Baldwin and other Hollywood top stars will gather January 12-15, 2012 to protect North American waterways while skiing the spectacular
Canadian Rocky Mountains at Sunshine Village Ski Resort and enjoying
the luxurious hospitality of the majestic Fairmont Banff Springs at The Fairmont Banff Springs Celebrity Sports Invitational.
Waterkeeper Alliance is the fastest-growing environmental movement in
the world uniting Waterkeepers who patrol and protect rivers, bays,
lakes and streams on six continents—more than 1.6 million square miles
of waterways—in boats ranging in size from kayaks to research vessels.
Waterkeeper Alliance is the leading voice for the world's waters with
roots dating back to 1966, when a concerned group of commercial and
recreation fishermen mobilized to reclaim the Hudson River from
polluters. Their tough, hands on, community oriented brand of
environmental activism and miraculous recovery of the Hudson inspired
200 other individuals and organizations to launch Waterkeepers from the
Mississippi to the Amazon to the Tigris to the Ganges and across the
globe to fight in their communities for the right to have swimmable,
drinkable and fishable water.
The names of other participants will be announced as the event draws
closer. The Fairmont Banff Springs Celebrity Sports Invitational, which has raised millions of dollars for environmental protection in
recent years, has in the past drawn such Hollywood A-list stars as
Glenn Close, Michael Douglas, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Meg Ryan, Dan
Aykroyd, Jason Priestley and Martin Sheen.
The stars will also spend two action-packed days skiing and competing in
fun events at the famous Sunshine Village. Activities including
toboggan/snowshoe races, and dual giant slalom races are well within
public view to lift ticket purchasers. The event will culminate with a
gala dinner and concert at The Fairmont Banff Springs by Michael
McDonald. Tickets are available for the star-studded gala, the only
open to the public event at the famed Banff National Park landmark.
"The Fairmont Banff Springs is pleased to welcome back this fabulous
event," said Francisco Gomez, Regional Vice-President and General
Manager of The Fairmont Banff Springs. "Supporting Waterkeepers
Alliance's work in protecting waterways strongly aligns with Fairmont
Hotels Environmental Stewardship and Corporate Social Responsibility
goals. Additionally, The Fairmont Banff Springs Celebrity Sports Invitational not only provides an excellent opportunity to showcase our hotel but
also enables us to showcase what Banff National Park has to offer
visitors looking for an authentic winter vacation experience"
"Sunshine Village is delighted to once again host Hollywood in support
of the Waterkeepers," said Sunshine Village President Ralph Scurfield.
"Our resort is recognized for its natural scenic beauty in a protected
wilderness. We are very proud of our environmental efforts and are one
of North America's leading ski and snowboard resorts in water
conservation. Sunshine has demonstrated true leadership with the water
and energy saving features built into new projects such as the new
Sunshine Mountain Lodge."
"Once again WestJet is delighted to be a part of the Fairmont Banff
Springs Sports Invitational" said Gregg Saretsky, WestJet President and
CEO. "WestJet has invested billions of dollars in fleet renewal and is
one of the most fuel efficient airlines operating today. The
opportunity to participate in a wonderful event which raises awareness
for the need to safeguard our waterways and our environment in general
is keeping with our ongoing efforts to promote sustainability."
In 2010, the made-for television extravaganza raised more than $1
million for the Waterkeeper Alliance.
Individual Gala tickets for this year's event are $500 CAD per person
plus applicable taxes. The purchase of a gold table is $10,000 CAD
plus applicable taxes. A gold table accommodates 10 guests and a
celebrity and their companion for a total of 12 people. Tickets for
