Toronto clinics to take immediate delivery of first machines with best image quality and half the radiation dose of other mammography machines - a breakthrough in patient safety and medical diagnostics

TORONTO/STOCKHOLM, April 18 /CNW/ - On the heels of Health Canada's approval of Sectra MicroDose® Mammography machines which screen for breast cancers by providing the highest image quality with half the radiation dose, Toronto and Mississauga-based Trillium Radiology Associates will take immediate delivery of four machines for its private diagnostic imaging facilities.

Sectra MicroDose Mammography is based on the company's patented photon counting technology. Unlike other analog and digital mammography machines, which require a higher dose of radiation to ensure image quality, the x-ray photons in Sectra MicroDose technology are detected individually by Sectra's digital detector. Derived from detectors developed at the famed CERN International Research Centre in Switzerland, the Sectra detector ensures that each photon is counted, making it possible to reduce the radiation dose by half from that used by other digital systems, while still obtaining as high or higher image quality. The system also eliminates the "dead" pixels that can arise in other types of digital systems and that can make the detection of cancer more difficult.

Images are delivered with a resolution of 24.96 megapixels, which is 2-4 times higher than the resolution of other digital systems. This is furthermore advantageous to patients as the high resolution of the image may aid in the detection of very early changes, which occur with breast cancer.

"The importance of low-dose mammography cannot be stressed enough," said Dr. Murray Miller, managing director, Trillium Radiology Associates. "The exceptional image quality, which potentially allows for detection of disease at an early stage, as well as the benefit of a lower radiation dose is a win-win for the patient and the radiologist. In addition, the system allows for faster and more comfortable examinations, making it possible for more patients to receive their mammograms while reducing wait times."

Dr. Miller added, "Europeans are ahead of the game when it comes to breast cancer imaging technologies using reduced levels of radiation, and this system has been used in Sweden, France, Ireland and other countries like Australia with progressive breast cancer screening programs for some time. I'm very pleased that Health Canada has approved the use of Sectra MicroDose in this country."

The first Canadian Sectra MicroDose Mammography machine will be available at the Radiology Associates Mississauga location by late April. The clinic is now taking appointments. The other machines will be delivered to Radiology Associates Clarkson location and two Etobicoke locations, Radiology Associates Etobicoke and Six Points Radiology Associates, immediately thereafter.

Sectra MicroDose Mammography is currently used in 19 countries and in all major European mammography screening programmes.
