TORONTO, Nov. 23, 2011 /CNW/ - Thirty-six percent of people coming to
food banks are children, which is an unacceptable number of children
going hungry in Toronto. You can help make a difference to families by
helping Daily Bread raise 1.2 million pounds of food and 1.2 million
dollars for this year's Holiday Drive.
Hunger is not about a lack of food, it's about the lack of money to buy
enough food to feed your family. Hunger is about struggling each day to
make ends meet, to pay the rent and to make sure your kids have warm
clothes this winter. With the Fall Drive finishing 140,000 pounds of
food and $85,000 short of its goal, Daily Bread is now struggling to
make sure that food gets to those who need it most.
"We need to fill our shelves to make sure people are getting food not
just over the holidays, but also over the next few winter months. It's
not a question of if we can reach those goals. We have to reach to
them. If we don't, it means more people are going hungry and more
families are doing without," says Gail Nyberg, executive director.
"Whether you can donate one can or $100, your donation is giving far
more than just food, it's giving out hope as well. Even the smallest
donation makes a huge difference."
The Holiday Drive runs until January 3rd. You can make a difference by donating online at
www.dailybread.ca or by calling 416-203-0050. Cheques can be mailed to Daily Bread Food Bank at 191 New Toronto Street, Toronto ON M8V 2E7. Drop off nutritious, non-perishable food at any fire hall throughout the year or any local Loblaws, Loblaws Great Food, valu-mart, nofrills or Real
Canadian Superstore starting November 25. Most needed food items
include: baby formula and food; peanut butter; canned fruit or
vegetables; canned fish or meat; dried pasta and tomato sauce;
powdered, canned or tetra pak cartons of milk; macaroni and cheese;
bags of rice; cans of lentils and beans; hearty soup or stew and bags
As Canada's largest food bank, Daily Bread Food Bank serves people
